I own an 03 - Drove an 05 - Holy Crap!

I test drove an 05 EVO yesterday and now I have a few questions. The 05 had a ****load more power than my 03. I would guess at least 30 more HP. It was very noticeable to the driver but even more noticable as a passenger. My girlfriend and I switched places and I have to say I want my 03 to have the nuts the 05's have. Question: Other than the hotside change where is all this additional power coming from? Is it in the tune? Is it boost? I know my engine is healthy (compression, plugs, ect). I have ridden in other 03's and they feel the same as mine but between the 05 and 03 it was a night and day difference.

As for handling...I did put the 05 into a few skids and it was better handling but it wasn't as significant as the power levels.

The only other noticable difference was the shifting. The clutch and shifting felt much smoother and less jerky than my 03.

Now please tell me where this 05 power is coming from!

Keep in mind my 03 is stock. Going from a modded 03 to stock 05 may not have be as shocking.

I own one of each. A 2003 Evo and a 2005 Evo VIII.

Stock vs Stock, the 05 is indeed noticeably faster. To me it felt like a flashed 03 in power, but it also spools up a bit faster and smoother. While its only rated at 5hp more, it has I think 10 torque more than the 03. Those are probably conservative as a stock 05 will dyno about the same at the wheels as a 300hp STi.

The tranny is the same, but the linkages and bushings are different. The 05 is MUCH better shifting than the 03. Its much easier to get used to....

The ACD, IMO, makes the biggest difference. It takes a long time to notice. You really have to run back to back on the same road at 9/10ths to feel it. I think the 03 is a bit more fun in some ways as the open front diff allows you to spin the wheels a bit more and get it to slide. But the 05 is indeed faster.

I find that in tight corners I can use the Tarmac mode to power oversteer and rotate the car very controllably. But in long high-speed sweepers, you do NOT want oversteer, so I click it over to gravel or snow mode where the center diff stays open longer to help pull the car through. I find myself clicking through the modes during a twisty road, so much so that I'm thinking of wiring up a steering wheel button for ACD.

Hope that helps.

hotside and higher boost at least on the '05s. The midrange punch is easily better.

Thats one helluva butt dyno you have there to feel that little extra hp/trq in the 05. If it feels like 30whp difference from your car, you might want to do a checkup or overhaul on your car. Or you could always throw it on a dyno and see if it still makes the #'s it should.

It's most likely the different hotside paired up with a little different tune to suit the changes. That kind of a difference can be easily fixed with a few inexpensive mods.

i have an 04 with tbe and base dynoflash and I drove my friends 05 and it seemed super slow, and I didnt even think mine felt all that fast. It felt better off the line with no exaust but the 05 just died at like 6000 rpm.

The peak is not too different but it is bigger than the 5hp difference. The power delivery is what most will notice. Stonger low rpm punch. All the 03 and 04 owners that drove my MR mention it.
