EVO vs. STi... reliability and practicality

I have been in the EVO vs. STi dilemma for a while now. I just found out that the training I will most likely completing will surely put me in the market for one next spring and now it is just a matter of which one to buy. I will be buying used and would like to spend $23,000 or so. I thought of a brand new 2006 WRX because I am also thinking about maintinence, practicallity and livability but in the end I can just see myself burried in a brand new $25,000 car and wishing it was faster. I have come to the conclusion I am not going to settle and I am going to get what I want, an STi or an EVO. Chances are the EVO will be an 03 or 04, the STi would be an 04... I want mileage in the 20k area but most of all the car has to be taken care of. I am wondering which of the two is more reliable and livable... which of the two is less of a maintinence pain in the ***. I know everyone insists upon staying FAR from modded EVO's however I would think I could get more of a history out of a guy with some basic mods than a random stock EVO... I am not talking about tons of mods, just basic things like TBE, CAI, Flash, Fuel pump, maybe HKS cams... I just don't want to have to dump a crap load of cash into a car I just bought... or buy a car that NEEDS something.

I plan on some mods myself, aside from that I want to know which car i could buy used and probobly have more faith in... I drive an Explorer now and that is enough of a pain in the *** with things going wrong. I am probobly going with the EVO because used they seem more abundant, I have always really liked them more than the STi, they handle better out of the box and they look nicer imo... it just winds me up thinking buying a used EVO or STi is like rocket science because everyone makes it out to be like you are inevitably buying a $23,000 problem. I want to buy the car, mod a bit, slap some all seasons on and call it good.

Will you ever stop, or will you continue this for an entire year before you're even in the market and when many things have changed and all of your questions have to be asked again, since you're relying on year-old info?

So, does this mean the evo is more reliable? My father's cousin's boyfriend's former roommate had one and broke his BOV...

Evo's are considered kind of high maintenance cars, so there goes your practicality out the door. Want something relible and pratical, got with honda, or toyota.
