Air Impact wrench Specs
I am looking to get an Air Impact Wrench.... So how much torque is really necessary for a "normal" situation.... My main frusteration is not being able to get lugs off that have been put on by idiots at tire places or dealerships... I know some guns can go up to 600ftlbs in reverse but is that really necessary? Would 300ish be fine? Would it be in my best interest to find a tool that matches my compressors 90psi CFM rating? I have a Craftsman 15Gal 3hp 150psi so it will do 90psi at 3.5cfm.. Am I correct in thinking that you want to match air tools for the right amount of CFM so in theory you can produce air just as fast as you are using it?

Yah... My main reason to get it is to take the damn lugs off that idiots put on at dealerships/ tire places. So what kind of torque should I look at 300, 400, 500? I am mainly worried about revers torque because I will never have to put anything on with that kind if force.

when you're taking them off, make sure to apply forward pressure until the gun stops after you've loosened the nut and released the trigger. If you don't, then there's a good chance the gun will flop around a bit and scratch the crap out of your wheel. I used to work at firestone, so I've seen this quite a bit

I am between 2 impact wrenches.... One does 400 ftlbs ave air 3.5cfm @ 90 psi , the other is 425 ftlbs ave air 4.2cfm @ 90psi.... My compressor is 3.5cfm at 90psi but the 425 one is local and slightly stronger... Will that be a problem with running out of air?

compressor ratings are like HP ratings, a sales pitch. still it is unlikely you will be maxing out that tool anyway, at least for long. you aren't in production with it are you? a few quick jabs with it should be no problem. max power for more than a minute will have you looking for a breaker bar.

Ingersol Rand IR 2130
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...ab=des#tablink
Best guns on market. Weighs half what the others weigh and stronger then all the others.
It also has the smoothest operation of all the others.
I've been using one (IR 2131) for probably 8 years and part of that time was professionally. They are the best.
When this gun came out originally 1 guy in the shop brought one for like $185 and it kicked everyone elses guns *** in the whole shop. Everyone ditched thier $400 snap on or mac guns for this one.
In fact, the 3/8 gun will take lug nuts off probably 90% of the time.

oh and the cfm won't hurt you with this gun. Your compressor will just run a lot.
I have a contractor compressor the is only like 3 gallon tank and I took a crank pulley bolt off a Honda engine with this gun and that compressor. I tried by hand and was moving the entire car with a huge pipe on the breaker bar. If you don't know, Honda crank pulleys are a real ***** most of the time.

This is really good info but to be honest I am not looking to spend almost $200 on an air tool.... I don't really need one at this level. Just something that has decent torque and will not empty my tank in 10 seconds. LOL If my compressor only produces 3.5cfm and 90psi then if my gun does 4.2 cfm at 90psi won't it run out of air?

This is probably the cheapest, high quality gun on the market. If you only are looking to spend $100 then buy anything. At that price point they are all pretty much the same.
If you just want to take lugs off occasionally then you are wasting your time with an impact gun. Buy a breaker bar for a lot less money.
I generally won't even use a impact on my Evo to take the wheels off, but I also put them on with a torque wrench. Like someone mentioned, it is easy to scratch up a wheel with an impact gun. I know once I put the Volks on it, I won't be using the impact gun anymore.
