The Impala SS was already one hot ticket when it came out of the Chevy plants but after receiving a horsepower treatment in Ligenfelter's shop it aquired performance that woud make a Corvette ZR-1 proud. The quarter-mile ticket went by in 12.9 seconds at 104.6mph and the 0-60 mph sprint took 4.7 seconds which is right up there with a $130,000 Ferrari F355. Those are improvements of 2.7 seconds and 14.5 mph and 2.6 seconds, respectively, over a stock SS. A $18,350 upgrade makes it all possible, which includes a long stroke crankshaft, forged aluminum pistons, tougher connecting rods, CNC ported heads, an all new valvetrain, a modified air filter, headers and a Borla stainless steel exhaust system. The final upgrade is a ram-tuned intake manifold for the small block engine which boosts displacement from 5.7 to 6.3 litres. This all brings an improvement of 165hp and 135lb-ft or torque. Another $1000 goes to a transmission upgrade and yet another $900 goes to a smaller axle ratio to quicken throttle response. Add it all up to the $24,405 base price of a normal Impala SS and it comes to $44,655, a bargain compared to a $68,000 Corvette ZR-1 and considering its blistering pace.

Specifications
Base Price, USD 44,655 Engine Type V8
Displacement, cc 6276 Horsepower@rpm 425@5500
Torque lb-ft@rpm 467@3500
0-60 mph, sec 4.7 1/4 mile, sec@mph 12.9@104.6
60-0 mph, ft 120* 600 ft slalom, mph 64.6*

*numbers are for stock Impala SS

^ sounds pretty mean.

^^ hmmmmm... sounds like a lot of effort for such a poopy looking little car. That is just personal opinion, though, of course.

Sounds pretty expensive just to run 12s and looking at the E.T. and trap speed, I'm thinking 12.9 was ran on drag radials or slicks.

1) Yep, that's a lot to make it equal to a stock 05 Evo. I hope the thread originator has realized the folly of his question.

2) That SS ONLY got a 12.9@104.6 and a 4.7 0-60 with slicks, because that's at least a 1.7 60' to get that et/mph.

I still love those Impalas. When they first came it they were the cat's meow. A big *** 4 door, with a healthy V8 was something new back then. I respected(and craved) it then and respect it now for what it was and is.

Well that was back in the day (i.e 90's) when they were somewhat new. For 12k can you can run faster then 12.9. New recipe is simple, get a 383 or 396 stroker kit with forget internals, add a ati procharger to it and a nice nos system and your at 700 to rear wheels on blower alone if you go all out, spray the nos and your at 850 to 900 depending on how hard you want to spray. You can get all of that done at a shop called combination motorsports. They specialize is in B-Body cars.

Anyway, in stock form they are pretty much dogs to any 2000+ sports car. Still pimping cars if you like to cruise though (owns a 95 caprice 9c1). Oh and they sound badass with a cam, headers and exhaust.

The monte is a joke though. Maybe they will be more interesting later this year when chevy puts a v8 thats rated for 303hp in them, but sadly thats still going to the front wheels.

older post...semi bump...

but howd it go? Im not even going to ask about the Monte, thats just stupid...But I had a 96 SS, LT4 motor (headers, full exhaust, intake, chip) Never dynoed it, but Id guess something like 360-370 engine hp. Not even close to my Evo any way you look at it. Damn thing weighted over 2 tons. On the freeway it was surpisingly quick, but in the 1/4 or worse 1/8 - my goodness, your Evo will distroy it. Havent gone up against one myself yet, or really seen one since I moved east, much more common in MI. But just wondering the punishment you dealt them...or did I miss it somewhere?

I can't beleive this thread has gone on this long. These things weren't much faster than my old 1993 Sentra SE-R. They were just too big. I never understood all the attention they got. A friggin 6 cylinder Altima will smoke one of these.

Id have to disagree. They were underrated, not because I had one, but there wasnt much difference engine wise v. a 96 Vette. Once you got it to move, it moved nicely. An an Altima was a 8 sec to 60 car, Impalas stock were high 6, low 7s. Id say that a second difference for the Impala means the Altima is getting smoked.

This truly is insane, lol! Bench racing does not take into account driving abilty. Just ante up the cash, and enjoy the thrill of a money race.

Everyone do this thread a favor and put it to rest. It has sucked enough conversation out of us over the last few days.

Have a great day,
