Power steering "pshhhh" noise

I started getting this odd noise that I can hear inside the cabin. As I turn the steering wheel left or right I hear a "pshhhhh" noise kind of like a tire slowly leaking air. The noise seems to originate from inside the steering column. Right now, the power steering feels okay. Just wondering if anyone else has heard similar sounds. Thanks.

No noise when the steering wheel is centered. When I turn the steering wheel and leave it there (not turning all the way) I can hear the noise. Probably a leak then. Would this be an air leak or a fluid leak? I'll have it checked out.

I have an '05 MR and I don't know if it's done this since new and I just haven't noticed it but I'm definitely aware of it now. It's like was said above it kind of sounds like a tire leaking air or a very low turbo spool like sound but in my car I only notice it when I'm putting some stress on the steering. If I'm sitting still and turn the wheel I hear the normal power steering wine noise but once the steering starts to get stressed you can hear this weird phsssss whistle type noise and it does sound like it's coming from the steering column. I first noticed then while doing some very aggressive driving up a mountain road; get into a tight corner were you have to keep feeding in angle and you can hear it phssssering. Seems to steer okay but it's a definitely noticeable sound.

That's just the pump doing its job. It'll be even louder at lock (all the way to left or right). Been hearing that for 42k miles now.

These cars are noisy ya'll.

I avoid lock on the steering at all costs; there's no need to put your PS pump through that torture for another 2" of reduced turning radius! You will eventually kill the thing doing that repeatedly.
