The stock tranny fluid needs to get warmed up and lubricate the parts before you stop grinding ... its normal for the synchros to grind a little in the first shift ... after that it should go away ... if it doesn't then your sychros might be going bad.
Using BG Synchroshift/ Pennzoil Synchromesh will help your sychros tremendously but if it continues to grind after you have switched to these gear oils then your sychros are probably shot ....

That sucks! Take it to the dealorship and demand a new tranny or a rebuild.

Now, if I cruise around for 20-30 minutes and shift hard into 2nd it will usually grind again.

Does this have something to do with tranny fluid being 'cold'? Would switching to something like Redline help me out here?
Sounds exactly like what happened to me, except earlier in its life. I have an 03'. My case isn't because of driver error (I've had several well experience drivers testify to this). If it were driver error, I would think I'd have problems with the other gears as well, which I don't, only 2nd. I even did the 'help' mods (syncromesh tranny fluid, underhood & shifter bushings, etc). The fluid only helped for about 3 months. Then it came back and got worse and worse, til today, I grind at least once every day I drive. I've been to the dealers and asked them about this. Luckily my car is still stock and I don't get the BS most people complain about here with dealerships. They'll rebuild my tranny when I get the time to bring it in.

If I were you, I'd get the tranny rebuilt before you start modding it.

from what i have seen on here, there are alot of 05's with 2nd gear grind. mine does the same thing and i only have 2400 miles. i just dont slam it in 2nd right away. i wait a split second and then put it in second. or if you really want to shift quickly, shift around 6500rpms

I get a grind going into 3rd with my 05. if i half press the peddle it wont grind, but when im all the way in it will grind. seems to not gring at higher rpms though,, tryed to shift a bit slower and still grind .. sounds like it a major issue.. but do I want to risk some shmuck at the dealership half *** work on my car??

No grinds here in to second. The 1/2 shift feels as good or better than my double synchro 1G racing tranny. I did nick third once but I believe it was due to the driver. Hasn't happened again since. Now with the Exedy twin disc it is very smooth but also very noisy too.

Mikey -> I have an 05 with 6.4k miles on her... I have the exact same thing on my car with the same frequency.

I did get a very occasional 1-2 grind in my 03, synchroshift fluid seemed to fix that issue right away. I'm gonna check out that pedal adjustment link and see what thats all about....

Driver error on my part too. My 05 can not be slammed into 2nd gear. Syncros seem like they need to get up to speed. I can get a quicker shift if I don't let off of the gas all of the way (*not speedshifting though) but, just enough to keep the RPMs in boost.

The only real solution is to slow down your 1-2 shift. The EVO is not the only Mitsubishi car that has this "problem".

Some of the things you guys have mentioned may provide a short term solution, but the grinds will more than likely return. The EVO 5-speed does have some limitations.

It's better to have a smooth, slow shift than a rediculously fast and "grindy" shift.

Synchros synchros synchros.... did I mention synchros?

I took my Evo into the dealership two times and was told there was nothing wrong with it. I finally did some research on these forums and went back to the dealership and had the service manager and the tranny technician go for a ride with me. As soon as the tranny tech heard the grind, he knew it was a synchro. They're fixing it now.

I've only gotten a grind when I've screwed up on the clutch disengagement timing. I've never grinded anything but the 1-2 shift, and have done it twice...I wanted to shoot myself when I did it...since then I've been extra careful and I've been able to avoid doing it.

I've got an 05 Evo with 11k on it.
