Back in 1992 if you bought a DSM with a 4G63 you had to go by the build date to know which oil filter to use. There were two sizes. The early cars starting in 1990 came with a large oil filter. In the middle of '92 they switched to a small filter and all subsequent cars used the small filter. Now, just to confuse you a little more, my early '92 car came from the factory with the small filter.
Somebody finally found out and posted the reason for the change. Mitsu was planning on using some part that might rub on the big filter. So, they introduced the small filter. Unfortunately, they never used this part. So, all the cars made from the middle of '92 on used a different and much smaller oil filter for no good reason at all.
Now we have two different oil filters for the Evo. Allow me to guess why.

The MZ oil filters are the successors to the MD filters. To be honest I believe that the older MD filters were made alot better. The MZ oil filters are a tad smaller and i experienced a loss of oil pressure when changing filters, while all things remained constant(ie motor weight/brand).
I'd also like to add that this filter is universal for all the turbo mitsu cars.

Yes the part # that they specify for the EVO is MI-110, although it fits, it is much smaller than the stock one.
I went on a limb and bought the Mobil 1 filter for the Dodge Stealth Turbo, part # MI-104 and it is the same size as the OEM one and fits w/ out issue.

I use the Fram X2 on every car I have ever owned. (XG7317). Your out of your mind if you think that this will lead to any sort of engine failure. Plus the filtering properties on this filter are very good. Plus I get them basicly free (monthly parts accout rebate check)

Fram filters are made from very poor quality materials. There are a couple websites that show dissected oil filters, and Frams were among the lowest quality.
Funny thing about the MD356000 is that its still the spec oil filter in Japan. My Evo IX came with one installed. Anyone have their new Evo arrive with the MZ filter?
