when I bought my car, the stupid mitsu dealer put in full tank of 87 octane gas in it. and guess what?
nothing happened. no knocking no fuel cut Nada! ran as good as 91 gas.
This is the reason why stock map is so rich!

the engine will detect knock and pull timing...
I set my check engine light on my eclipse gsx to flicker if it sees knock. One time I put texaco gas in there and it blinked like crazy. All the engine does is pull timing so you have little engine power output...

lower octane gas will just make your car more prone to knock under high boost/ high temp situations. If you're stock, with the sloppy rich stock map than you have nothing to worry about. If you are flashed and a lot leaner on the top end than I'd keep my foot out of it until you run the stuff down and can top it off with some rocket fuel.
There's a past thread about someone with a reflashed car that had 87 put in it and he utterly destroyed the engine due to detination.
YMMV,
Greg

The manual states you can use even 87 if the others are not available. It didnt say anything about changing your driving habits. It did say that it could trip the CEL but that it should go off when you fill up with a higher octane fuel.
