Stuck between complete opposites...

On one hand i'm considering the EVO RS. Unbelievable handling, steering, launches, AWD for bad weather, 4 Doors, and a good size trunk. And on the other side we have crappy paint, horrible interior, gauges, no power windows/locks/mirrors, weak low end power, no ABS, a weak stock clutch, and high maintenance costs.

Something about driving such a raw sports car daily just gets me excited though. I also tend to think to get the most out of this car performance-wise you have to launch hard and/or chew through brake pads. Not sure if not having abs/power windows/locks/mirrors will **** me off or not.

The other hand I'm considering a used (below 7k miles) GTO. Awesome power, unbelievable low-end torque (great for normal driving), awesome 6.0L V8, traditional V8 sound, VERY good interior (not made by pontiac thank god), Strong tranny, RWD, extremely comfy seats, great gauges, way better turn radius, Highway beast (seen traps as high as 108-109 stock). On the other side we have a pretty bland exterior, sloppy steering, hefty weight, and weak handling. Something about having a much more luxurious daily driver and being able to do massive burn outs then go out and destroy the G35/350z next to me is appealing. Then again, the styling is so bland....and i know it doesn't even have close to the handling capabilities of the EVO... and in the rain? Ack.

I live in Arizona. I rains 20 days a year here. I drive 20k miles a year. If a car cant do sub 5 second 0-60 it isnt fast enough. I drive city 50% highway 50%. I am a sucker for low end torque and V8 sound, though i also LOVE boosting and the turbo sound of pushing air. I can imagine myself loving the great handling of the evo, and blistering launches, but also love the daily driving low-end torque of the GTO and the awesome torque curve and great top-end. RWD burnouts would be fun, along with AWD launching. I can see how i would enjoy driving something a little more comfy would be less tiring then driving a stiff suspension evo, that along with quick steering may annoy me on the highway. The GTO sway and bland styling will annoy me daily as well. I'm so split on these 2 opposites its pissing me off.

I refuse to get a used evo8 (dont trust used turbo cars), and can't afford a new GTO or GSR (thats why i put RS). Anyone else ever been so stuck between seemingly completely different options?

ummm...i was debating either getting a sti,but i heard alot of advantage and disadvantage of both cars and overall the evo has better performance.anyways since you are in the evo forum get a used gsr instead of GTO.

I wouldn't want to drive 20k miles a year in an RS......hey, call me a wuss. It may sound cool to be driving such a hardcore sedan but I think the novelty could wear thin pretty quickly.

It doesn't snow, it hardly rains where you live. If I lived in such a climate it would open up a whole world of high performance cars I wouldn't even contemplate at the moment (living in Upstate NY). Depending on what cars you've owned previously, you may also be disappointed with the Evo's stock performance (unless you're buying it mainly to track or auto-x); in which case you'll end up modding and possibly jeopordizing large parts of your warranty.

The RS comes with AC, so I never roll down the windows unless I am at a drive through. So power windows are not needed.

I only had to adjust my mirrors once. So power mirrors are not needed.

It has no radio. That sucked, so I purchased used stock speakers and head unit from other forum members for less than $100 shipped and installed them myself.

Stock power band is strong from 3000 RPM up to 6000 RPM in the 05's. That means at highway cruising speed I don't even have to down shift to be in the power band.

The handling rocks, and after you are used to it, you can drive one handed (or with your knee) just like any other car... just don't sneeze if you are not driving with your hands

The clutch is not bad if you are not into drag racing. For normal driving it isn't bad at all. If you want those sub 5 second 0-60 times you will need a few mods including a good clutch.

Maintenance costs are if you are taking it to the dealership every time you turn around. I can change my own oil, as well as changing the transmission and differential fluids.

Just my $.02

i was extremely stuck between a bunch of cars a while b4 i picked the evo. I didn't pick the gto because of the same reasons you don't like it and more. I'm pretty sure you're looking at the 2005 right, because the '04 has the 350hp motor, the 05 has the 400hp beast from the c6 corvette. While thats a great motor and will most likely have an aftermarket for parts because of what people will want for the corvette, the gto has no future. It's sold really bad and i doubt will make it another 2yrs of production. The gto is has too much dead weight. 3750lbs. too damn heavy. Plus it's like the s2000, you get that ***** going too fast around a curve and hit a little gravel... i don't care who you are, you're going to lose it. If you want a V8 wait for the C6 z51 that (should) beat the viper. That'll be a while waiting, or get a dodge, They got a few stockers pushing 450, and those will be around for a while. But if you want the fastest possible car for the least possible money, you can't beat the evo period. Whether you're going to mod it or not. I am open to all types of cars, and picked the evo after alot of searching.
And yes the RS has AC. Where did the Rumor actually start? I remember all the press on the rs origionally said no AC. Did mitsu switch and ad AC before they brought it here?

I have had the evo rs for 1yr and 3 mo. and for over the first yr i didnt get the radio yet. mainly because it was soo fun to hear the car work. exhaust, bov turbo. u get the point. as far as the rollups not that big of a deal. and its a good way to tests dates. if they ***** about the windows they will ***** about.... Owning and Evo is like owning a life size RC car. And if u ever get the chance to drive the car on dirt roads 60mph + it is worth its weight in gold. I would have a hard time letting go of my Evo short of lack of funds for a liver transplant. u get the point its just that much fun.

I really don't think the stock clutch is bad at all. I do a hard launch every once in a while and have managed to do 0-60 in under 5secs numerous times and havn't had a problem with my clutch. I think the stock clutch will last a long time even with some spirited launches from time to time if you are a decent driver.

The 05 GTO actually is selling pretty well. +50 hp, stronger tranny, hood scoops, and some other minor things actually make a difference.

Scoot- what i'm saying is that to get under 5 second 0-60 consistantly, your clutch wont hold up long. I think the EVO would take more abuse doing a 4.8 0-60 than the GTO would. I'm not sure how much $$ it would take to eliminate the sway in the GTO, but i would guess stiffer progressive springs, adjustible shocks, bigger sways. And the EVO would require a stronger clutch, and hopefully the TC can hold up.

Honestly, i will never rally an EVO. An autocross would be fun and i think i would try it, as well as a few 1/4 mile runs. Maybe a road course. The GTO would be more for daily driving, but i think some drag racing, and maybe an autocross.

Undrcroft, the weight doesn't really bother me that much. It has enough torque to handle it.
Corvette's are not an option because of insurance.

I know the car that i chose must be a car that i can live with for 5+ years.

mrmefodman - I would put my own stereo i have sitting in my garage in. I know what turbo's sound like so i would get bored pretty quickly just listening to the engine/exhaust.

I work with a guy who has an 04 GTO and he was saying that it seems the 05's are not delivering the power they are supposed to be for a lot of people on his GTO forum. To me the GTO is more of mid-life type of car. In that it is more of highway cruiser, soft, float down the road kind of car that can run the 1/4 pretty good reliably. I think you figure out what the Evo is supposed to be. It mostly depends on what you want to do.

ls2gto.com....

Never heard anyone complain about the LS2 not delivering the goods. Same engine as the C6 corvette....

He's probably just jealous he got an 04 with 50 less hp, weaker tranny/brakes, so justifies it by attempting to discredit the 05.

I have test driven the GTO, but no dealer will let me test drive the EVO. Who knows, if i could get a test drive EVO i think my decision would be a lot easier.

I'm still not sold on the goat.... i hate sway, and i really dont like the scaled up cavalier look.
