question - why does most vendors sell intakes as part of a stage 1 upgrade?
Because most staged upgrades have a tuning device/flash to accompany it. Also They are covering the basics already exhaust MBC etc. now if we were going to get into a debate about which part of this staged kit produces the most worthy results I am pretty sure the Intake would lose

I believe this also . Its not that it's the best MOD for the money but it is easy and does provide somewhat of an increase out of the box.

hks short ram intake is only 1 of the many intakes out there. even if that one sucks, it does mean that the rest of them will. and who stated that this guy should get the hks short ram intake as his first mod?

the originall question was what ate the best mods to start off with. In my opinon the best mods to start with are going to be the ones that are easy to add on. possiible the easiest bolt on would be the air intake. maybe not the best bang for the buck but that wasn't the original question. I am not going to argue with you about the inake. I agree that there a better mods to add. the best bang for the buck would have to be the MBC. nothing like a 100 dollar upgrade that increases the WHP significantly.

i still havent found a stage one upgrade that includes a tuning device/ flash
but thats besides the point.

my point is that an intake is still one of the first good mods

intake imo, is better than getting cams or a fuel pump as a first mod

btw - advertisements do have some legitmately to them

It seems that the most popular choice for intake is the HKS or the AEM

thanks, i figured there would be at least one that offered some sort of tuning. i just couldnt think of one right away.

but notice that the first item in their stage one is an intake , than exhaust
http://www.automotosports.com/EVO_stage_1.asp

and no mention of cams or fuel pump in stage or 1 or even 2 ...
imo, and it seems the opinion of ams ,these 2 mods ^^ are not good first mods

but intake and exhaust are in the stage 1 upgrade. ie a couple good first mods. but then again thats from an advertisment from a reputable turner.......
