5 quarts of Mobil1 10W30 Synthetic from Wal-Mart, <$21.00. Filter + crush washer from ~$6.00. Dropping off old oil for free at the local parts store, $0.00. Changing your own oil with high-quality stuff for about the price of a cheap-O oil change from Jiffy Lube, PRICELESS...

Overfilling will probably lead to blown oil seals and burning oil.

SAVE YOUR RECEPTS. You will need them if there is a problem with your engine and you need any kind of warranty work.

you forgot about the crusher ring on the oil filter.

Everything you need to know about the oil change....there's a How-To section on this forum..

evo is the easiest car in my family to do oil changes on.... both filter and drain nut are very accessible and the vertical orientation of the filter makes it easy to prime without a mess.....

love it compared to hondas where the filter sits right above the exhaust =P

Do not overtighten the oil filter, you can crush the seal and it'll leak from the filter...torque only to spec

Just changed my oil today!
Pretty easy

ramps, filter wrench (like one posted for miata), huge drain pan with spout, oil from costco.

One thing I do.. I go a little further than putting a little oil on the gasket, I pre-fill the oil filter. Works with the evo cuz it screws on vertically. Just be careful putting it on. Don't overfill it.

Here is what you need.

Oil: you need 5 quarts of MOBIL 1 synthetic oil( you may not use all of it, but most times it will take between 4.5 and 5 quarts.
Oil filter: OEM(prefer) or other which will fit according to your local parts store.
Replacement Crush washer for the DRAIN PLUG(not filter): buy this with the filter at your dealership.

Something to drain and store oil safely for disposal(check for local place for oil disposal)

A funnel for clean fillup.

Way to raise car safely. Jack stands or Ramps(don't use the jack) as well the little things which keep tires from rolling. metal wedge type thingies.
Oil filter removal cap or tool(can get them usually where you get the filters)
17mm socket wrench

Let car cool before draining. Oil may be hot otherwise.

its very easy. I do it for security, its always done right, and I don't trust cheap places or even the dealership. Its just peace of mind.

The crush washer goes on the oil drain plug bolt. as shown in the other link on here from norcal evo.

Also make sure to lube the rubber seal of the filter with some new oil other wise it may tear while tightening.

How do you torque an oil filter to spec?

Nevermind, looked at the link posted and that answered my question. That's a cool oil filter wrench thing. I can get that at Autozone? Or is that a Mitsu thing?

Sounds like I also need to get a couple torque wrenches for this car, as every "to do" seems to involve using one.

It usually says on the filter or the box. What ever you do dont use the filter wrench to tighten. Lube filter gasket, screw untill gasket makes contact, then tighten 1/2 turn to 3/4 turn more. Thats it. Of course check for leaks

Just did my first oil change. It is the easiest car that I have changed oil on. One of the most difficult one is my 4runner. I get oil over the place/garage drive way after the change. I didn't a single drop from my evo
