Exclamation ACD & tire diameter question

I brought my car in today to America's Tire to get a tire patched and ended up having to replace two tires because of excessive wear on their inside. So right now I have new 255/40/17 Falken Azenis RT-615s up front and the OEM 235/45/17 Yokohama Advan A046 in back. The difference in tire diameter between the Advans and the Azenis is 3/10", but considering the Advans have 12k miles on them I'm guessing it may be as high as 1/2" because of tread wear. How will the ACD react to this? Will the drivetrain be OK (center differential clutch) or should I grab my ankles and throw another $400 at two more tires.

BTW...I got the car aligned right afterwards too.

I had 2 new tires (back) on my car from 5,000 to 20,000 miles and I had no problems other than uneven wear (even tho I rotated them. It would be good to replace all the tires when the originals wear out tho.

What size rim width are you using that you installed 255/40/17's on them.?

Fourdoor...why is it so crucial I replace them right away?

The new tires are on the stock rims.

I know with my s4 you are supposed to run the same size tire all around. I forget the reason though

Because you are damaging you center diff as we speak .... tires+rim on an EVO or any AWD need to be off the same diameter .... change it ASAP or get ready to buy a new center diff/ACD ... even in the owners manual they encourage one to buy a new spare-tire asap because the one provided has a slightly different diameter ...

Your front wheels are making 806 revolutions per mile, and your rears are making 796 per mile. Your center diff is eating those extra revolutions and it'll probably eat itself soon.

Wow I'm glad I asked. I didn't realize that 1.3% would be that much (or even any) strain on the center differential. Can anybody tell me how the ACD is compensating for the different diameters right now so I can get a visual.

The ACD uses hydraulically activated clutch packs to engage and disengage the drivetrain between the front and rear. Right now those clutches are getting fried ....

You put a lot of strain on the center differential and the limited slip system (either the Viscouse coupling, or ACD setup) having different diameter tires on the front and back of an AWD car. If you had replaced them with a set of stock tires it would be within the acceptable range of size variation.... but your new tires have a different diameter than the stock advans.

Ordered 2 more Azenis and while I'm waiting the guys over at Americas Tire are letting me drive around on a full set of Pirellis P-Zeros. Thanks for the input guys. I had no idea. The Evo is my first experience with AWD.

I closed this thread so people will not keep telling you to order new tires when you have already done so.

If you (Steiner) want it re-opened just PM me and I will open it back up.
