purpose of fuel cell

this is probably a newbie question but i posted it there and got not answers so here it goes, whats the purpose of a fuel cell rather than a regular gasoline tank, is it to keep fuel pressure up during hard cornering? that was my gues, i just noticecd that most purpose built race cars have them. thanks for any responses

Fuel cells usually have a bladder and are more crash proof ie: don't leak under impact they exist for safety purposes. There are also fuel cells just for drag racing which are just fuel containers and offer no safety improvements over the stock fuel tank. The stock tank is well designed and unless you roadrace a lot, you are fine with it. Under extreme cornering with the stock tank, you can suck air and run lean so some folks will run a surge tank or fuel cell with baffling which in both cases makes sure the pump doesn't suck air.

For my thinking its primarily a saftey item as it will survive a crash better.

i may be wrong but i'm pretty sure Buschur said their kit saves 30lbs. Holds same amount of gass though. Weight reduction is my main reason for wanting one.

a fuel cell is for maximum and most assured fuel pick up consistency. the forge one has foam inside it, this is to prevent fuel slosh, some have baffling, some have just a very basic design. but basically it's so you can gaurantee fuel pick up and never run lean, this is useful in almost all racing, drag included.
