i guess it's down to whether u want pure performance (awd+turbo+modifiability) and practicality (4 doors+5 seats), or u want symbol and rwd and n/a engine. i drove the M3 and it's awesome, but the Evo is a better performer (esp after mods)and has 2 more doors than the M3. let us know what you choose and if u choose the M3 eventually post some pics
wouldn't it be perfect if u could just afford both

yeah I wasn't impress at all when I drove my friend's 03 M3 SMG, down shifted and floor it, didn't go no where. Unlike the evo, just took the fawk off. But like I said in many thread
you cannot make an EVO luxury
so M3 = luxury+performance
All depend what you use the car for? M3 will definitely draws attention and respect from ppl at all ages.
EVO is a classic too!!!! from gen 1 - 9 still running strong.
BUT BMW is expensive as HELL to maintain/fix
I wouldn't do it if I had to pay extra $$ but direct trade, probably yeah because m3 is worth more and even if you don't like it later on, sell it, you can still buy an decent EVO without adding $ on top of it.

I think you can't go wrong with either. Each car has his highs and lows.
My brother had a 97 3.0l M3, then traded in for a 98 3.2l M3 then in addition to that he got a 2003 M3.
I have driven all his cars, the 98 m-3 he had was fitted with a Dinan S/C.
The interior quality on the BMW is years lights ahead of the cheap looking Mitsubishi. The standard equipment on the M3 is also far superior than the EVO but the EVO cost much less and it is more oriented for high performance.
Also the EVO makes much more power easier than a M-3. Last but not least the insurance is another factor. I have to say I am splitt on this decision, I recommend both.

Without seeming like I am jumping ship , I would drop this thing like a hot rock If I could manage to get my hands and wallet around a 01+ M3. Sorry EVO brethren but their is just way too many creature comforts with that power to boot.

There is this person that is willing to trade me his 01 BMW M3 light blue, 6 speed, and 20,000 miles. The M3 is in excellent condition. He wanted to trade me plus I give him $3500 cash. He said he liked the evo and didn't want to pay for the insurance on his M3. I guess it's pretty high.
I just wanted to know how many of you guys would make this trade?

4 months ago when i checked insurance, it was cheaper on a M3 than an evo at least here on the mainland. also i would check out the M3 sites and search for any recalls on the 01's. i belive the early models had some problems with the engines but i could be wrong. its just the insurance story kind of makes me wonder ya know?
and above all make sure that you DRIVE IT HARD on the test drive to know if you like it before you buy! it is a totaly different car than the evo, pay attention to how it shifts because there is not much that you can do to fix that. (imo it shifts funny) by the way i voted no but get what you want not what the poll says.

I would never trade my evo for an M3. I have spanked every M3 that I have raced and I'm not all about the luxury. I think a sports car should be simple inside like the cloth interior in the evo. That just my opinion tho. lol......I JUST LOVE MY EVO funnest car i have ever driven.

For you, how was the 97&98 M3's handling vs the EVO? In terms of handling I am talking about how the car communicates to the driver. The steering feel, turn in and road feel through the steering. Comparison of how the cars communicate the load and unload forces of the 4 tires of the car in cornering situations.
I had a 97 M3 and the way it communicated to the driver was incredible. I was able to drift in the rain with absolute confidence because the car was able to communicate to the driver exactly what was going on at all 4 wheels. I have a 03 M3 now and although its a much faster car, you are very isolated in terms of driver feed back. Thats why I'm looking to sell the 03 M3 for a 06 IX

I would'nt trade for the M3 just because it's an 01 and the first year of the E46 which means problems ! IMO! Also i sold my 97 M3 for the evo and was thinking of a 02 M3 but it's to expensive to mod with such little gains so i went for the evo!hope this helps

I deffinetaly would not do the trade, If that was an '04 and newer M3 yes, I have seen listing around IL for older model M3's going for around $20,000 or lower $20s. I know the going rate on '03 evos stock form seem to be selling for more than that. Doesn't seem like a good trade to me. I say just keep the evo and buy the M3 from the guy.
