Get it certified pre-owned for 100k miles and your mainteince costs will be very minimium. You'll end up having to pay for wear items like tires, wiper blades, clutch, but I believe brakes, oil changes, any CEL code, 02 sensor, etc. is fixed via warranty upto 100k miles.
If you want a nicer daily drive and don't plan to mod then go for the m3 if not then go with the evo.

i think all 2001 and early 2002 m3s got an extended transferable warranty of 10years/100k miles on the engine at the end of the engines blowing up fiasco...
good news if you r going to keep it stock, bad news if you want to mod it...
I would suggest late 02 onward models to avoid them ticking time bombs.
In the end, after 4 BMWs, I find them roughly 3 times more $$$ to mod hence my switch over

kbb says an evo 03 evo with 9800 is worth 25,940. An 01 M3 at 33,800. This is ball park for private party. Two thoughts neither one of you drive much 9800 on a 03' and 20k on a 01'. Secondly both cars are exciting in different ways topic has been hashed out alot. I really like my evo but an M3 would be sweet also. Enjoy what every you do and please put some miles on that evo.

There is this person that is willing to trade me his 01 BMW M3 light blue, 6 speed, and 20,000 miles. The M3 is in excellent condition. He wanted to trade me plus I give him $3500 cash. He said he liked the evo and didn't want to pay for the insurance on his M3. I guess it's pretty high.
I just wanted to know how many of you guys would make this trade?

DO NOT modify 2001+ M3s unless you you have some lambos and ferraris and this is a car for extra fun...M3s are pushed to their limits...more pushing and baam ...you end up with nothing...plus...the only mod I saw was the supercharger kit for 10k...and the small # of people who has it are not too happy I heard.
Me...I wouldnt trade my EVO for that...do you see it n my garage now...no...by the way I am a car enthusiast and not EVO crazy or anything...my garage has some other toys...I could have had both but didnt want the M3. If you want to buy it purely to say that you have a BMW M3 its fine...alot of people do it.
if the engine on that M3 is not gone yet it could happen in the future..I know about the Extended warranty...but...would you want to take the down time??
2001 is a very risky year for that car...check roadfly.org...they would tell you.
the interior is nicer in the M3 but go with an S4 if thats a concern.
if you never had a luxury car you migjt like the M3 but for how long...until you think you are overpowered by many...that was my experience and I sold it in 2003 when there werent too many cars that were faster.
ok i never typed in a msg board this much b4
just my 2 cents

When BMW does the two service intervals where they pull the head off and check valve clearances you'll be wishing you had bought that Evo. Your checkbook will be wishing the same. You'll also hate those $200 oil changes with the special Castrol oil that's only made on the moon.
BUT, if anyone is interested in an 02, I have one for sale. PM me for info.

I would do it...but it really depends on what you want at the moment. If my EVO was in the same condition yours is and i had the same offer i would do it.
keep in mind though...it's not about performance...cause if you want the better performer...i would keep your car

Simply put.. That M3 Owner wants to get rid of his Car for an EVO think about that. There is a reason he's doing it, and I doubt it's simply car insurance costs. If he has owned the M3 for a while now, money isn't a problem maybe it's something else and you should research more on. In all honesty take away Brand Names and society's impression of what is more bling bing and look at the car's from a sheer performance standard. When you look at it that way especially considering what you can obtain with much less money on the Evo there is no question why the EVO is a better car and that owner wants to give up his M3.
