Autoweek Cites Evo Markup
Car News briefs: Mitu's Evo markup
By AUTOWEEK
Reports of at least one California dealer tacking on $20,000 to the $30,812 sticker price on the hot new 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution are inaccurate. The sales manager at the San Jose dealership confirms a markup on the 271-hp all-wheel-drive rally rocket, but not that high. His add-on: $4,900—which is still a hefty piece of change just for handling the transaction. But we suppose it pales in comparison to the $270,000 another West Coast dealer is demanding for a BMW Z8 Alpina Roadster listed at $137,595 (AW, March 17).
Does anyone has a pic of the window sticker with 20k markup to email to Autoweek?

Love how quick they will deny stuff like this... if it is just "market driven economy" and "every dealer does it" then why lie about it to cover up? I mean if they aren't doing anything wrong, then there is nothing to worry about, right?

Response I received:
*Francis,
I saw this same image which prompted me to check with the dealership directly, where I was told the $20,000 markup was incorrect, but that they are tacking $4900 on. The person I talked to had seen the same email. I'm checking further, but I believe this sticker has been doctored.
Thanks for writing,

I sent Bob an email as well. I believe he might have been talking about me. I saw the $20K markup at Capital and in Stevens Creek (same owner). There are plenty of people who can verify this markup. Personally, I think it was a really poor marketing idea. Here's Bob's response to me.
Although I was willing to take the dealer at his word when I first received the email photo of the window sticker, your direct observation obviously calls that into question. The dealer salesperson I spoke to said he had seen the email photo and it was incorrect, but that they were adding $4900. I've taken the liberty of forwarding your email to Mitsu Motors North America for further investigation, though they point out that the corporation can't control dealer markups.
I'll keep you posted, and let me know if you hear anything more.
Thanks,

I've got a MS Word document where I put the data first, I then convert it to an HTML file. I can send the word file to anyone that wants it.

" I'm checking further, but I believe this sticker has been doctored."
it's either an extremely good digital doctoration (highly unlikely) or a joke played by someone 'inside' the dealer, which I doubt. It would mean the person had to grab, photocopy one of those spec sheets labelled with uniqe VIN number, write out the price and dealer markup, and stick it, take picture, take it off, stick on the old one, sounds like a lot of trouble for something so insignificant.
as for digital means, it's spotless, even the static and grain from the camera are consistent throughout the image. dang, you can even tell that it's written by a lefty.
and of course there are some of you here who have seen this sticker in person..
shady shady dealer..
