Why I'm joining the dark side
I'll be honest and say that I had always dreamt about buying a nice 6-speed TT MKIV Supra ever since I was about 14 or 15, but recently I have been also looking at the Evos and I think that is where I will end up.
When I return from Japan I’m going to be selling the 04 accord coupe and if needed I will borrow a bit of money and buy a slightly used Evo. Here are the reasons:
#1. The price: I can find a nice used Evo for around 22 grand with fairly low miles. I haven’t seen a 6 speed Supra with less than 100k miles either very lightly modded or stock more than maybe once or twice, and even still I don’t feel like buying a 10-12 year old car with that many miles to use as a daily driver. I won’t be able to afford the maintenance, and though Supras are reliable, every car starts to get a bit quirky when it’s been around for that long.
#2. RWD vs. AWD: I will have to drive the car I buy in the winter. I would be doing the Supra an injustice by taking it out in the brutal Toronto winters, and AWD cars are just more manageable in the snow. Yes I know an RWD car can cope with some good winter tires (I drove a 94 325ci in the winter with all seasons and got through it, painfully), but an AWD car with a good set of winter tires will be an even better bet.
#3. Milage: Gas is ridiculously expensive, and I do plan on keeping the car relatively stock so I do think I will see slightly better gas mileage with the evo than I will with an MKIV. I know 80% of it is how you drive but there’s a ****load of traffic in Toronto so it’s not like I’m going to be seeing boost every minute.
#4. Warranty: The Evo has a warranty that can be covered even in Canada. The Supra simply doesn’t.
#5 Room/comfort: As mentioned before, this will be a daily driver. After my experiences with two previous 2-doors (1 coupe, 1 convertible), it can be a pain in the *** to lug people around when room is limited. With a Supra, I know the rear seats are a joke and I wouldn’t be able to fit any one of my friends into them. This is a problem for me because I do plan on hauling people around often, including family! As much as I would love to say “it’s just me and my (insert derogatory word for girl here)” I can’t, and honestly I like driving around with friends!
#5. Rarity: As cool as it is to spot a Supra in Toronto, or anywhere in Canada for that matter, seeing an Evo is even more unheard of, due to the fact that they still continue to be illegal in Canada. I have done extensive research and due to the nature of my citizenship, properties, etc. etc. I will be able to bring the car to Toronto for the purposes of study and drive it around with American insurance, plates, etc. no problem. I’ve always wanted to have a really rare car, and I’m sure that’s what is probably so enticing about the Supras to a lot of people as well.
#6 I’m only 21: I do eventually plan on going to California for law school so when that time comes maybe I’ll want to try something different, and I’ll sell the Evo and buy a Supra which would be a much more manageable car in California. Hopefully by then I would be able to afford to keep it maintained and be able to afford to extensively mod the thing. After all, who can really keep their MKIVs stock these days?
Well, those are the main points I can think of right now. Please feel free to give me your comments, arguments, info, anything. Let me know if I might have missed an important piece of info or if I’m dead wrong on anything I want to hear!
This is still almost a year away as I won’t be buying it until I get back from Japan. Until then I’m just shopping around and doing research.
I know this board will be biased so I guess asking "do you think I made the right choice" is probably kind of stupid :P

sorry to tell you, but u wont be the only one with an evo in toronto. a friend of mine has an 03 with michigan plates. he has had it there for the last 5 months.
however, i would do more research about the warranty in canada. i remember reading a post a while ago where the guy said the dealer in canada would not perform warranty work on his evo because mitsubishi usa is somehow different from mitsubishi canada.

As for the warranty I asked a few different dealerships and they said it wouldn't be a problem.
walkedu: I think Kyoto is a bit different in terms of the foreigner love. Since I'm studying here I find myself being used as an english teacher more than anything else. It's getting a bit annoying. My biggest pet peeve is speaking to people in Japanese only to have them speak english back! I decided to go off on some guy last night when he spoke broken english and tell him I ****ed his wife. He just looked at me blankly...

considering all your reasons, i think you're making the right choice with the evo (and i'm being non-biased, i love the supra too).
that said, i also thought you were going to buy an sti. so on this board, you're joining the force!

jk jk, STi's are cool too but if the dude's lookin for rarity and true turbo+awd performance and real back seats, Evo's the way to go =P
