what about something like this to start http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLPP8
Sounds like it comes with everything for under $200. I was looking to spend between $200 a and $400 total.

don't have experience with either. What are the pros and cons? When I said novice I meant completely clueless.

The 1/18th scales are pretty small but can be very fun.
I would get this if your gonna get used to rc cars and understand the concept of them.

Yeah Just try that, You will have fun. But once you get into it, It will just get worse. I say price and to keep in maintained are the only bad things about nitro, Plus you have to learn how to tune it, But that is pretty easy to learn.
