my stiffy whines?

Hey well just installed my "stiffy" and man, its awesome. I adjusted it right to the hardest setting, havent tried soft or med yet. Theres a noticeable difference in the shifting and when letting off the gas(doesnt jerk as much) only concern is im hearing alot of "whinning" coming through form the engine bay now. Maybe its road noise? It starrts when im in a low gear(1st, 2nd) and let off..coasting. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks, stew

Don't have a "stiffy" He said "stiffy", but it makes sense that it would create problems of noise in the interior of the vehicle. The motor mounts are designed to keep unwanted harmonics or noises from getting in the interior of the vehicle and now you have created a new path for that noise to travel. It may also be exciting the natural frequencies of different parts in the engine compartment, front clip, or radiator surround. I'm an NVH Engineer and this is what I know to the best of my knowledge.

Yeah, I get the same whine. It's normal. SOme have tried noise suppression material at the plates and contact points for the strut bar.

The whine will still be there on the the lowest setting, only a bit less noticable. Mitsuorder has dynamatted the mounting point with good results.

that whine is normal for me. I've tried the softest setting and now I have it set at 11, it whines in both settings, but moreso at the stiffer setting. I also used dynomat under the brace on the shock tower, but did not dynomat under the center brace of the strut bar. It also seems to be worse when the car is cold.

Mine whines a little as well but its only noticable in 1st and 2nd at low RPM. I think it sounds neat. Love my stiffy to death...it will be my first mod on every car I buy from now on.

In another thread, someone put the Powerflex motormounts in as well and stated that the whine subsided considerably. Dynomatting seems to help as well...

The whine is the power steering pump... you just notice it more now after the install... its always been there though.

Whines on mine as well. Annoying at first, now I kinda ignore it and the added road noise from the coilovers... it's the price you pay for a modified car.

I thought it was the P/S pump so I removed the belt and drove the car (not long) and the noise was still there. I think it is just motor vibration translated through the "mount".
