Sorry about the long post!

So what they do is get your commitment to buy the car by saying something like this after the test drive: "so what did you think? Then when you are talking numbers they get you to look at monthly payments rather then the total cost. They tell you it will be $900 a month IF they are even able to get you qualified. If they stick with this story long enough then the customer gets pretty excited when the payments get down to $550 a month. It is the same game day in and day out at the car dealership and most are very good at what they do. I could write a book about this!! Personally I staked out the dealership I wanted to buy at ahead of time. I found the type of place that I could get a very good deal. I waited until IX started to hit the ground in WA in late Oct. That is when I purchased my 2005 VIII for $1300 UNDER DEALER INVOICE (not msrp, INVOICE) I also was able to dodge some high tax rates to save another few hundred. I also recived a $200 check a couple weeks later for over payment on T&L.

A lot of people on this board neede to teach themselves the art of negotiation. It's a game, that's it. If you think the dealer is trying to rip you off, then you lack the skills to lower the price, IMO. If the dealer won't budge, next. It's that simple.
I know when you guys try to sell personal vehicles, you always start at the lowest price you'd take, right?

Davis Mitsu. in CA is selling there MR's for a couple over MSRP. I know the owner and might be able to get you MSRP. I will get it for MSRP when I go to buy in a couple of months.
Roseville Mitsu. in CA had a $5K over MSRP on there MR and they will not budge. Do not know what the markup is now, but I know there still is one.
There are so many dealerships that will let the MR's go for MSRP, you just have to have the cash when you walk in and want to actually buy.

Potamkin in NYC (largest volume Mitsu dealership in USA allegedly) had a sticker of +10k when I purchased. Needless to say, they sold it for 500 less than MSRP - I think it all comes down to inventory, negotiation and EoM targets (some may argue it's seasonal).

What I like to do is learn and test drive the car at a dealer that I know sucks, if im happy with it, go back home and put some figures down on paper and have intrest rates from your local bank ready to go.
Then walk into the dealer that you know are somewhat decent, when the salesman greets you just let them know "this is what I want, this is how much i'm willing to pay for it, and ill buy today", 8 times out of 10 you'll get what you want.
