Because the people buying those cars apparently are ok with paying much more than their car is worth?

Dear Mike,

[...] When I went to a local dealer here in Southern California, the salesman mentioned a "stupid boycott" going on when he was trying to justify the markup, telling me how Mercedes S600's are marked-up and no one complains. Well, a 8% mark-up isn't much to complain about vs.. say a 50% and as bad as a 100% mark-up (Santa Monica Mitsu $28,000!!) at CA Mitsu dealers.
[...]
The boycott is far from stupid. You should've told that salesman that the mark-up is stupid because part of the Evo's appeal is it's $30K price tag. An S600 makes no such appeal. Marking up the Evo in that way just kills the price point that made it appealing to begin with.

Amen!

You're not seeing the big picture here...

You can't compare a 50% markup on a McDonald's french fry to a 50%+ markup on a $30,000 car. One is pennies. The other is $10k-$15k+.

HUGE difference.

As Claudius already wrote, there's a your "regular" markup over MSRP... and then there's (potential) total rape of the customer with a ridiculous markup.
