remember all "techs" are technically clueless or they wouldn't be techs, they would be master mechanics...

Why does everyone think a tech at a dealership doesn't ever know anything. Theres different levels of techs and cars get assigned to techs depending on what level they are at and what needs to be done to a car. They are not going to give a diagnosis problem to a lube tech. I really wish people will stop thinking techs that work at dealerships are stupid.

If its not mechanical, it must be electronic ie: ecu, sensors, fuses and the like.

I don't think techs are clueless. But I am starting to question if anyone at this particular dealership knows how to work on a turbo engine. (mostly just my frustration speaking at this point).

It sounds like you have any of the intercooler pipes including the air intake cracked somewhere. This hoses are difficult to spot because they come with a mesh around them.

If neccessary remove every single line/hose. If it was a fuel it wouldn't sound like a loud pop. Mostlikely you don't have boost because of a leak.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Welcome to the world of Mitsubishi where EVERY level of expertise uses the term "technician" In fact MOST of the automotive world uses that term. For example, our shop foreman is a Mitsubishi Master Technician. You are apparently mistaken. The difference between a "mechanic" and a "technician" is that the mechanic THINKS that the "box that makes it run is broke" The technician KNOWS that " the ECU or PCM is malfunctioning and that the pin test shows the circuit that controls the MFI is where the problems lies. We have corrected the short in the circuit and replaced the pcm. Your car is running perfectly now".

The technician is more than familiar with the technical aspect of the car than the mechanic is. The mechanic understands the mechanical aspect of the car. They are two entirely different people with different or sometimes overlapping knowledge.

Do I need to tell you why/when the term changed from mechanic to technician?

I too think that there is a problem with the boost piping/hoses.

I agree, the mesh makes the "blowout" harder to spot.

Does the car idle ok? Did the engine die after you heard the noise or was it just low on power?

Yes, that is from the condensation settling and removing the soot from the pipe.

The car idles fine. It chokes above 3K.

As everyone else has already said it's probably an intercooler pipe. The part that scares me is even if it is in the worst place to get to it should not take them this long to diagnose and fix it.

Sounds like the intake pipes. Maybe one cam loose or poped off. When I installed my intake way back, I had forgotten to tighten on of the clamps on the upper intercooler pipe, and the same thing happened. I gave it some gas, and there was this poping sound, and black smoke out of the exhuast. The pipe had come off the throttle body. Still is weird though that it has been at the dealer and they have found nothing wrong.

maybe they're spending more time to find other aftermarket parts?

Maybe it's been fixed since day one and they are going Ferris Bueller on your a$$. I had the exact same thing happen to me last week and it was the small hose on my INJEN intake just under the MAF. I assumed it was intercooler or throttle body because I had just had a new FMIC installed. Go figure.

Build yourself a pressure tester for $10 and pressure test it. In an emergency you could even use a bicycle pump for air.
