skipping gears

The gearing on the IX seems so short for normal daily driving, and I'm wondering how many people out there with the IX skip gears. (ex: 1st to 3rd, or 2nd to 4th). Does this have any bad effects on the synchros or clutch of the car?

Thanks.

IMO: skip gear is the same as use your right arm and and right foot a lot (e.g :lift weight) and don't bother to do anything to your left arm and left foot.
Result: other gear (1,3,5,6... ) worn out more than 2,4. It may cause shifting is sluggish in future.
I'm not expert in cars and mechanic , so i would hope any expert help us answer this question.

I skip gears everyday in my STi. No problems so far. Sometimes I even skip 2 gears, I.E. 2nd to 5th.

Chevys (vette/camaro) FORCE you to skip shift to save gas in some regimes. They market "skip shift eliminators" that bypass the **** computer solenoid. Never heard of it hurting their trannies though either way.

I have an '04 VIII and I've been skipping gears for almost two years now without a problem.

Mitsu skipped one for years.
As long as you don't over rev or bog the engine it won't make any difference at all. The whole idea of more gears is to make transitions smoother.

The skipping itself shouldn't be too much of a problem in terms of wear, but it mainly depends on how you do it. If you take care of the revs properly (i.e. not just shoving it into 2nd as you slow down in 5th at 4k or something) there shouldn't be any problem.

It would probably bog you down a bit though. I don't have the ratios to hand but if you skip gears you're probably going to take it to pretty high rpm if you want to get into the next gear with some sort of oomph.

no worries at all, if you look at www.howstuffworks.com you can see the internals of a manual transmission and see that skipping gears will not cause any problems. All the gears are always meshed, and you simply decide which drive collar is engaged to which set of gears.
