What's the banging noise when shifting into gears at high RPMs
Went over 600 miles so i decided to test her out. First launch was at 3000 RPMs..kinda boggy but then hauled *** after that. Every time I shifted (as fast as I could) I heard a "thump" coming from the back of the car. What is this, is it normal or am I doing something wrong??
By the way..I launched the 2nd time at 5000 RPMs..Holy ****..I took off like a slingshot

I get that too sometime.
I've concluded this so far:
1. Trans is cold. "engine is warmed up"
2. Power shifting, cold weather no tracktion and power gets transfered to the rear due after a fast jerk shift.
The WRX you can't even powershift because of the harshness. I'd give it time to break in before any comments. Trans always loosens up after some milage.

Be forewarned the trans in an EVO isn't designed to handle powershifts. You will eventually cause it to fail.
As for your testing you shouldn't launch it at 3500 as that's not high enough and will do nothing more than burn the clutch disc. As for that noise it's probably you not engaging the drivetrain smoothly and the noise you hear is the clearence in the rear diff. My car does the same thing if I am not smooth with engagement. Seriously you need to engage the clutch BEFORE you step on the gas. Not doing this will cause that banging sound that you are hearing.
SMOOTHNESS is what's needed. Start there then work on speed.
Good Luck!

the rear diff makes a ton of noise when really working. while out in my buddies evo last night. the diff would make loud mechanical clunking noises whenever you went through a high load corner just right, and i would think the noise you are heaing is just the diff working, since when going thru the gears hard the diff wants to lock up.

Sorry to say to the nay-sayers... But all AWD cars make that noise when you shift hard and fast... All of mine do that whenever I'm at the track runnin... All of my friend's cars do that as well.... The driveshaft and rear diff makes that noise... It's normal when shifting really fast...
