kelvin for HIDs?

Dont buy into the 8000k,100000k nonsense.

www.europeanautosport.com = AdvancedOptik 5.8k and 5.1k D2S bulbs, lots of Evo's running these bulbs. Also worth mentioning are Philips Ultinons via ebay for best price.

just out of curiousity what do you mean by nonsense.. I dont know that much about HID'S but I believe that the higher kalvin just means the change of color (correct me if im wrong please) so wouldnt it just be a color difference?? are the higher kalvin more expensive??

refer yourself to post #3. educate yourself on why he says NOT to get the 8000k-10000k nonsense. there is a real reason. i personally have Philips ultinon 6000k bulbs in two cars and wouldnt go any higher in kelvin due to the actual light loss...

6k is the max i would ever go considering you start to lose visability when you go any higher.

Like a few have mentioned, after 6,000k you get into two things. One is that is complete marketing hype meaning the bulbs while marketed as 8,000k do not measure anything near this at all. Same goes for 10k etc.

The second is that after 5,800k you will get a significant lumens loss = halogen like lights - or crappy HID's that resemble the color of Barney and grab the attention of the highway patrol and not in a good way.

For the record the Ultinon or 'Cool power' as marketed in some areas is actually a 5,800k bulb also, just marketed as 6,000k 'rounded' up.

YEP 14000 k is purple the higher the number the less you see on the road

Hmmm, interesting. Are your low beams stock color? I thought about either getting a yellow kit for the fogs, or maybe some 6000-8000K color and leaving the low beams alone. But the blu/yellow setup looks good, reminds me of the Lexus GS from FnF or the Evo VII on GT3.

I just checked ebay. $200 for the bulbs + $25 to ship + $5 insurance. heh... they really know how to rack up the extra costs.

I believe there was an official statement from Philips that stated that they only mess with 6000K due to the popularity and legality in Asia, but that they were a 25% decrease in luminosity from their standard 4100K bulbs. I'm too damn lazy to Google it up though.

I had 6k bulbs in my Audi A4 and they gave better visibility than the stock 4.3k bulbs. I'm going to be upgrading my evo's bulbs to 6k soon.

i'll explain to my best knowledge since others are just **** when answer to peoples questions. The reason why the higher kelvins are not good are because the higher you go in kelvin rating, the less visible light. I studied astronomy, in there you'll learn about wave lengths. microwaves, UV, xrays, you'll learn the spectrum too. So basically with all these wave lengths you learn that to humans, there is only one section that we can see visibly, and that's the color spectrum. (the rainbow colors) just go in that same order, starting from red ending in darker colors. our sun burns at 3000 degrees, hence 3000 kelvin which is why it appears yellow to us, cause around 3000k is the color yellow in the spectrum. The higher you go in kelvin, the less visible light will be. Now that's not entirely the deciding factor for how well your hid's work. Stock will always out perform any aftermarket, reasoning is because the first off it's just the ballast and bulb, but the housing is designed to output a HID bulb, stock halogeon is not. Also i'm not sure on all HID system, but i know that every aftermarket HID system i've seen runs at 35w, and some stock systems run at 75w, i'm not sure what the stock evo runs at, but i've been in both cars with stock and after market, and trust me OEM STOCK HID, are the best!!!!! i've owned four cars with stock OEM, and i've owned about three cars with after market HID's, can't be stock. Hope that helped, sorry for my vague explanation.

Not only that but the two companies that make quality bulbs for all the OEMs are Philips and Osram Sylvania. The 5800K Ultinons from Philips are the bluest color made between the two. Anything that is 8000, 10000, or 12000 is probably just cheap crap from Taiwan and won't be of the same quality. All the OEMs use ~4100 bulbs. The effects and different shades you get come from the optics/prizms each of the car manufacturers use in the projectors.
