Why don't EVO's sound "ricey"?

Displacement might make it a little deeper, but there' more then that considering what seperates an Evo/DSM exhaust note to a Honda's. I have heard ricey, blatty, raspy 2.4L Accords.

I would venture to say it is probably the turbo and the lack of Vtec on the Evo closely followed by the design of the exhaust.
Cams have a noticable effect on the way an engine sounds (I noticed a difference when I put them in my Evo) especially on a NA engine where there is no turbo to soak up the sound.
I'm sure certain exhausts sound way better on Honda's than other exhausts do.

I kinda have a question, while we're on the subject. I've always wondered, what exactly is the purpose of the huge gapeing, chrome can on the back of all the foreign exhaust systems? I mean don't get me wrong, I love the look of the HKS catbacks, but do they really serve a purpose as to performance? or is it just sound? I only ask because I just bought an evo, and I want to add an exhaust system, but I'm also in the process of becoming a police officer, and they'll make me remove anything that has a ricer look to it. thanks!

Way for the police to be impartial.
"I don't care if it is legal or not I don't like the look of it!" Says, the officer. As long as it meets noise ordinances tell them to shove it.
That probably shouldn't **** me off but, for some reason it does.

This really is a tough question. I don't think it is displacement, becasue as said a 2.0L NA motor can sound all loud and raspy. But it is not necessarily being turbo or NA either as I have a friend with a Mercedes 190E with a GT35 and it sounds WAY louder and worse than my EVO with 280's. Also, I know my own car sounds more "ricey" as you put it when it was not tuned properly and was running too little timing. Late timing causes more of the exhaust burn to happen after the exhaust valves have opened creating more noise.
I think it is a combination of these 3 things:
- Displacement
- Turbo vs. NA
- Ignition timing

Its the turbo like stated before along wth lower compression ... its a pre muffler before it ever hits the muffler.
My god this thread is stupid.

Hey, there's no such thing as a stupid question, just the one that goes un-asked. So he wanted to know why the Evo's sound dynamics were so much different than other "similar" cars. I actually found it kind of interesting, but then again maybe I'm just a newb.
