Why don't EVO's sound "ricey"?

I agree with flabarm on this one. I think it does have to do with the quality/choice of the exhaust they use.
I used to own a Civic Si. It was the old EM1 style (1.6L DOHC w/Vtec), when I first got into the "modding scene" I had heard some Pep Boys weld or clamp on exhaust tips. Those things sounded horrible.
Fearing some CARB crap, I went with a basic muffler. Decent sound from the inside...but to everyone else it did sound "farty".
I dropped that out and changed it to a cat-back exhaust. These obviously cost a LOT more than a basic muffler or exhaust tip, and I dont see too many "name brand" ones being run around here. But its a night and day difference between the two. From a distance you can hear either a smooth exhaust rumble or a farting noise.
As far as other possibilites for the sound...some people I spoke to swore that any sort of backpressure in the exhaust system of an NA honda slowed the car down. They were under the impression that a hi-flow cat/no cat plus the biggest exhaust piping and tip possible would give them more power. To me, it just made the car sound like it was struggling to accelerate. Basically the equivalent of a "moaning bee".
But who knows...around here...most of the mindset by the "streetricers" is: As long as its cheap, who cares how it looks/sounds etc...a modification is a modification that will adds tons of power to the car. With all that power...no one will be able to see how horrible the car looks/sounds.

OK, people say this is a stupid and pointless question? How come we haven't gotten a definate answer then? I have also thought about this. A lot of t has to do with the muffler itself. Most hondas get weld on mufflers that have paper thin tips. I have compared this with other like the magnaflow which is thicker and the thicker wall/tip makes a lower tone along with how much air is passing through it. More air=higher pitch

its true it isnt the car. if u put a $50 exhaust on any car i bet it will sound ricey. like he said, thicker walls would make a deeper tone.
some of the mufflers could prolly shoot oranges. lol..
