strange power delivery

I still only have 300 miles on my IX, but it seems like it doesn't really pull hard after about 4000 rpm's.

I usually drive around right at bout 3000 rpm's and when I floor it it does always give a pleasant but gentle push in the back as it goes past 3500 ot 4000, but between 4000 and 5000 it seems like it just isn't really pulling hard. It gets a little noisier, but it doesn't shove me in the seat. does it get mega rich above 4k?

Does it get much better above 5k rpm? It sure would be disappointing if the car pulled hard for about 500 rpm, and the rest was just noise...

It gets louder after 4k rpms becuase of the MIVEC I think. It will get louder if you have a downpipe...Also, just because it doesnt throw you back in your seat, you won't be disappointed in how fast it is. I have a friend with an 06 STI and I beat him everytime we race. My other friends say that the STI pulls a lot harder compared to My IX With SSL so it seems faster.

You always feel an initial torque spike that is stronger than anything else, but it still pulls hard to 7000rpm. You will find out once you starting ragging it out to redline in every gear. Then, after a tune, you will remove all the richness above 5000rpm and pull even harder.

when you say richness, how rich are you talking? 9.5 to one (like stock wrx/STi's )? what should evo's run on pump gas? 11:1?

When I dyno'd in stock form, it looked like this:

3500 - 12.5
4000 - 12.0
4500 - 11.5
5000 - 11.0
5500 - 10.5
6000 - 10.0
6000+ - <10.0

It goes very rich, but it really depends on the car itself and mods. In stock form, you are probably hitting low 10s or high 9s. Once tuned, you want to be 11.3-11.5 on 93oct or 11.1-11.3 on 91oct (or so).

Well if you are cruising at 3k (off boost), then floor it...It takes time for the turbo to spool. By that time, you will feel it at about 4k like you said, especially in the lower gears.

This car seems to benefit most by downshifting (even if that gear is nearly topped out), just to get the turbo spooled for the next gear. Remember it's a 4 cyl not an 8.

I've test drove the sti and the evo back to back and if you really pay close attention, the sti only feels like its pulling harder. The sti is heavier and has a looser suspension so when you get on it, it gives you the sensation that your going faster than you actually are. I think a lot of people buy the car based on that sensation. Off the line, though an evo will usually leave the sti behind. I've found that with moderate mods, the sti does a little better in the top end though. Regardless, I love my evo and respect the sti for being a great car.

But, yea, as far as the power delivery goes, like Warr said, your feeling the torque spike from the turbospooling up. Once its at full boost the far balances out and you dont get that g force sensation as much though you still are screamin along.

Just need more miles on it. The car starts making good horsepower at about 5500rpm. Horsepower isn't gonna shove you back in your seat like the initial torque spike. Mine pulls great though past 5k.. most noticeably in the upper gears.

sti is alot easier to launch because of 2.5 liter and does not rev as high as our 2 liter ? am i wrong?

The 2.0 WRX was much easier to launch for me than the Evo and it makes far less torque. The clutch felt stronger for the power output of the car. The stock clutch on the Evo is weak to limit drivetrain stress, so it's harder to find the medium between bogging and burning the clutch.
