Could someone tell me the difference between the turbo on the IX and the one on the 05 VIII. They both say TD05HR-16G6-10.5T, but the IX has a letter "C" added to the end of the 16G6. What does the "C" signify?

Because before the 9's came out people got wind that it had an improved turbo. Someone must have saw it, assumed that since it was better and looked a little bigger that it must be a 20G, because in DSMs that's the usually the next MHI turbo to step up to. Why the poor, misunderstood, unloved and often overlooked 18G got dissed, I don't know.

NJ, the IX just has a larger compressor cover.

Is that what is commonly referred to as the compressor housing? How would a larger compressor housing increase power?

The larger cover gives more volume to the cold side of the turbo. Generally more power potential at the expense of spool time.

Correct, and the expense of the spool time is then remedied with the mivec.

So the exhaust side of the turbo has not changed. It is still the same cover and same turbine?

Yes.

As I said, the only change with the IX turbo is the larger compressor cover.

Yah, the 05 MR has no additional power. It's identical to the other 05s, but all 05s have a better turbo than the 03-04s due to the 10.5 hotside.

You guys are making my head hurt!!!

Has any one bench tested the new EvoIX turbo? How much more "airflow" does the IX turbo have over the 05 EvoVIII turbo?

While we're at it...

What’s the flow difference between BR's EvoIX 20G turbo and TT's Real 20G turbo?

The only real differences I've seen on the IX turbo vs the 05 VIII turbo is the larger diffuser and cover..

Although I beg to differ on its power potential, Since the internal dimensions of the compressor wheel and the scroll portion had not changed much, the peak power potential should not change much..

HOWEVER... Because its a larger compressor cover and exducer volume, it has the ability to maintain that power over a broader range, this means less hot air and more efficiency..

But according to most of what I had read, the revision was designed to reduce surge and maintain boost a little better than the earlier turbo..

We all know the cars themselves are a little more powerful than the 05's.. but there is more than just that new turbo to account for it, there's a new ECU, a new Tune, Mivec and redesigned cams, a few other things that come with the car out of the box that many of us had to add early on.. The biggest improvement of course was that turbo, and many are able to produce more HP with less mods than ealier cars..

I do not feel that the IX turbo and the earlier turbo are all that different, but the reduction in surge and a flatter more stable boost curve certainly improves things in the "Aftermarket" where the tuning takes more advantage of these things.

I agree with this statement. That name makes it sound like "The Evo 9's 20g" not a 20g upgrade that fits the Evo9. I think that has confused a lot of people who haven't paid the 9 a lot of attention.
