Drop in air filters: Un-confuse me please

First off...yes I did search. All that searching just confused me.

So right now I'm looking to keep the modding simple. Mostly cosmetic (if that) and a "easy" mods. I live in CA...so aside from warranty issues...I'm looking to keep the car as stock as possible to prevent run ins with dealers as well as the police. The car is fast enough...for now.

Anyways...I was looking at getting a Ralliart drop in filter, I may get the Works filter...if they ever have them in stock...but after reading thread after thread after thread...this simple drop in mod is turning into a headache-so can someone please set me straight on which one I should go with-or shoot down any false info that I may have read about.

Here's the rundown of what I've gathered from the filters I've looked at:

K&N has conflicting arguements over the oil causing problems with sensors.

HKS-has to replaced after a few thousand miles, so its better to invest in another type.

Ralliart-foam type filter makes the car run like crap-unless tuned. Cotton filter (which I can't find) is supposed to be good.

Works: Good filter, not over-oiled...but out of stock.

Stock Filter: Good enough for the car, paper filter is great for filtering.

I hope I am not over-analyzing things...I mean it is just a filter...or so I thought.

Run the K&N. You should not have any problems.

I've had my K&N in there since the 600 mile mark. I'm at 7500 now, cleaned and re-oiled it once, no problems at all.

Order the WORKS and wait, that's what I did. You can try calling them to see what the lead time is going to be. If it's too long, go with K&N.

I'd go with the Work's filter also.

If you are not into modding then leave your filter alone.

I love my Works filter as its not overoiled from the factory. Kinda pricey, but definitely worth it.

I have done nothing else to my car, but the most noticeable difference with my WORKS filter is more reluctance to stall in first gear on a cold morning. With the stock filter, I have to give extra gas right after a cold start to make it up the road, before the car warms up.

Aside from that, the car does feel a little quicker than 100% stock.

The mod is a good one if you are not really into modding, since it is quick to do and invisible to the untrained eye (and completely invisible with the air box lid on).

One hint, when you put the new filter in, secure the left clip furthest from you first.

Thanks for the feedback so far!

Just to address some issues:

05-EVO-GSR: It's not that I am not into modding...it's just that it would be more practical not to mod. The cops around here are jerks. I had a modded civic...sleeper on the outside for obvious reasons. Cop pulled me over in a residential area (after buying some donuts for breakfast ironically enough) I was going approx 10mph into a turn...he wrote me up for 40, the proceeded to harass me about mods, then wrote me up for a bunch of b/s. It hasn't gotten better...been pulled over reasons from a loud exhaust, to robbing a house. Needless to say...I don't need that kind of trouble-and doing extensive modding around here is like putting up a huge sign saying "pull me over now".

RnM: I'm not too worried about the price since it will be one of very few modifications...I was prepared to buy the Ralliart filter which has been retailing for more on some websites...but I do appreciate the heads-up

You won't be dissapointed if you wait for the Works, as someone else mentioned, there is a noticeable difference in throttle response compared to the stock filter. Its not a huge gain, but the drivability is all around better.

I like the Works. It can't hurt to wait.
