I'd say get the IX.

You can drive an Evo now; not 2 years from now.

You will pay through the nose with the "additional market adjustment" that most dealers will charge for the X, along with what will most likely be a higher base MSRP. All for the privilege of being the "first kid on the block" to deal with bugs/issues?

What if the production car differs enough from the "concept" car, that it looks even more like a (insert generic japanese car manufacturer brand here)?

If the X is the greatest thing since sliced bread, I'll buy it, but only after it's been out for over a year and all the hype and price inflation has died down.

In the meantime, I'll have had 3 years of fun in my IX!!!

Good Luck on your decision!

Ummmm, while concepts never looked the same as their production model counterparts, Mitsubishi lately, at least from aesthetic point of view, has stayed rather close to their concepts. Recent examples, Concept E and the new Eclipse, in my book the overall shape of the body was very similar (of course interior was totally different as well as all lights were altered but when you look at the cars from the outside they were rather similar).

Then there is the Pajero Evolution concept and the new L200 pickup truck, again the entire shape and especially the front of the pickup are very true to the concept, and then there was Mitsubishi Colt concept which in all reality became the actual Mitsubishi Colt except for the changes in the interior.

So my guess is that Concept X is not that far-off of an actual production car. I see that they may slightly alter headlights (actually I think the headlights will be a bit enlarged but the shape will remain the same), tail lights, dual exhaust, interior will be more civilized and probably the 20 in wheels won't make it. But the overall shape and dimensions of the car are pretty much set.

I really can't wait 2 years for the X, man i didnt' know it would be that long. I was thinking a year. And i'm not to afraid to admit that i like the styling of the X, i like it a lot.

Funny thing is, i used to be real into the bmw scene and people said the same thing about the m3. I mean look how with each evolution of the m3 it got bigger, fatter, and rounder. I remember people saying yea it has 333hp but it won't handle the same and it looks rounded with no sharp edges. Now everyone drools over the current m3.

I dunno i have plenty of time to make a decision and if i decide to buy the MR i will do it at the end of the summer or early fall. I just wanted some opinions from current Evo owners.

Get the IX!

And yeah, I do not think Mitsu will be producing any 2007 Evo IX's anytime soon. From what I have heard at my dealer is that the Govt. regulations will be changing for the 2007 MY cars, and the Evo will not offer the required side curtain airbags. In lieu of changing the car to include these airbags for one model year, they will bag production for next year, and release the X in 2008.
It would cost them too much to add these to the car to meet this requirement, and they opted to put their money into developing the X. Just what I've heard, so not too sure how accurate it is.
I just ordered my IX yesterday, and the dealership told me that Mitsu was starting up another production run to complete any outstanding orders. As of May 1st, no more orders. Mitsu will build what has been ordered, and those will be delivered into August. That will be it until 2008... except for whatever Evo IX SE's they produce and provide to the NA dealers. My dealer stated that they could not order the SE, but they would get whatever Mitsu gave them... which is one Evo IX MR SE. They will get that car, and it would likely sell for 40K. Thats all I have heard.

i know it's tough decision, and depends how you want it to be,

-for daily drive 400whp range, get a IX MR would have tons of fun,
-want something 500whp+, get a GSR IX or VIII and put tons of mods on it.

-keep waiting, you might get more headache, because bimmer 3 will have turbo version coming if you like luxury M3.

i would say, get whatever you can afford and like it most for now, then worry about the future. Best of luck for what you get!

Another vote for the IX. Just ordered mine today from S. Coast (white MR). Here are my reasons: great price, proven and evolved design (they've been improving the basic platform for several years now and the IX is really great), 10 year/100K warranty, easy modding (if you're not worried about that warranty!), good looks and styling, and, did I mention, great price!

just to contradict the "first-gen worries" that myself and many others have mentioned they ARE valid... However I had an 04 STi (first year they were brought to the states, and first year of the factory turbocharged 2.5 and it was ROCK solid for 30k miles until it was stolen.

True about the STi, they are bringing the Evo X to the UK first. Maybe to sort the first year model bugs out before introducing it to the US???? hah that would suck for the uk consumers.

Get the IX! Let Mitsu work out the impending kinks/bugs that may arise with the first run of Xs...
