stock rotor

has anyone seen something like this on thiers

seems like theres a chunk missing from the center.
i have rotors waiting to be installed but i have this awful grinding sound. and it happens even after im not using my brakes. which led me to believe the problem isnt just the pads.

Well remember - rotors need to be balanced perfectly, so maybe they had to machine that off to make it even? Otherwise it looks like it's been there for a long time so I doubt your grinding is that. Did you check the pad thickness?

my pads are being replaced as well i've been waiting for them to arrive. they have some meat left but not alot. enought for to want to replace them. im just trying to figure out why when im not using my brakes i hear the scraping/grinding sound. sometimes when i make a left turn i hear it in my right rear. almost sounds like my exhuast fell off the hangers just not as loud.

Well the brakes normally float just over the surface of the rotor - so if you've worn your pads down SO low, you may have worn the pads past the rivots that hold them. Since the pads wear faster then the rivots, the rivots may be coming into contact with the rotor, wearing a groove in it.

The only fix is to replace the pads. Happened to me on my first car, a 1983 honda civic.

Pull your calipers back and see if you can see the rivots or a groove in your rotors.

well i dont have much light to work with now. but there were no major grooves or anything to harsh on the rotors. being the way they are u think its ok to drive with out any hard braking. everything is being replaced anyway. thanks man.

I dunno - I have a personal policy against driving a car which makes any unusual griding noise. My suggestion would be to park it if you can until you get the pads changed, or take it to the dealer and have them take a gander at it.

Reading back on your posts, I think you're about to go with the rotor / pad swap so it may be no big deal to ya to ruin the pads/rotors on there now. I dunno - grinding noises w/o brake application are scary imo.

Does the noise go up with speed? Does it go up with RPM? Does it go away at highway speeds?

yep, my stock rotors have some areas like that, it is machined in there to balance the rotor at the manufacturer.
