Has anyone ever taken their Evo into Mexico?

If you keep to your self and stay a real hotel you wont have any problems. If you go during spring break worry about drunks hitting your car. That happend to my old truck but luckly no damage to my truck just one ****ed up Nissan.

My dad and I drove his BMW 740il down to ensanada and tijuana when I was twelve. We were in san diego and he wanted to make a stop in mexico. The whole time we were driving around I was freaking out. Everyone was just staring at us like we had targets on our heads. Luckily we didn't stop and once the sun began to dim we turned around and headed back for the border. I can almost guarantee if we stopped we would've gotten robbed/jacked/killed... Mexico is a bad place to drive around in, especially if you're an american in a nice ride.

as fun as it may sound to bring your evo to mexico and drive it around, ask yourself "is it really worth it?" so much bad could come of bringing it south that could easly be prevented by keeping it in the safety of your garage.

yea dont take it to mexico, take it to canada! they are far friendlier but just as inquisitive!
Last time i was in montreal i heard "C'est une Evo, fantastique!" and "your lansseur
is tres hot"
Better than, "we're takin your ride and your girlfriend, ese" IMO...

I take it to Piedras Negras(Eagle Pass border) all the time to visit my grandma. My other grandma and family live in Cuernavaca outside Mexico City, and in Torreon. I've only taken my Evo to Piedras. I wouldn't take the Evo deep into Mexico because the gas quality can suck and is actually more expensive there. When I was younger my dad and I used to drive to Mexico City from San Antonio all the time in his old M3. We would go through Laredo and Monterrey. We would only take the toll highways and they were extremely good, and in some parts much better than the US highways. You can go really fast since people actually have road etiquette and only use the left lane for passing and use signals for communication. I just went recently in my Grandmas Mexican VW Passat to Curnavaca and it was a blast. I averaged about 100mph and made great time. The toll highway from Mexico City to Curnavaca is one of the best highways I have been on in the world including Europe. I only wish they made highways like that in Texas. It has a famous curve called "La Pera" because it's in the shape of a pear and deadly if you take it to fast. You have to stay in the right lane though because there's always rich people from the city that comute daily in their Ferraris AMG's and exotics that are going 130 through the mountains. Some American car companies rent cars that you can take into Mexico. As far as safety, when worked in Mexico in Torreon I felt safer there than in the states. I think random voilence and killings are more prevalent in the USA but drug and political violence happens everyday in Mexico.

I can only speak for TJ, but that would probably be THE LAST place on Earth I would want to drive an Evo.
I've been in plenty of ghetto Asian countries in my life growing up in SE Asia, but never did I feel as unsafe driving/walking around in TJ.

Thanks for the replies. I've driven in Mexico before and been there many times (even deep into the country). I noticed that the border towns (Tijuana, etc.) are a bit more unsavory than other parts. My immediate concern would be the availability of quality premium gas. As far as taking a nice car into Mexico is concerned there are quite a few people who take expensive RV's there for long periods of time. Good common sense would seem to be enough to avoid most problems.I'd rather take my Evo into Mexico than some beater car with dubious reliability. A beater is more likely to break down and parts availability is a problem. But perhaps a rental car would be better after all.

The gas in mexico is crap. I would only go as far as your tank can take you since if you boost with the gas there you are more likely to knock.

I don't wannabe be a drama queen . But while in Mexico we got arrested for smoking pot 
we where taken to jail. While being escorted to our cell, we saw a man sitting in the middle of his cell with his head staring down surrounded by cops, then a loud bang !. $2000 later we where off never to return.
