transfer case whining.....

ok im pretty sure the whining noise my car is making is comming from my transfer case.... does the whining noise mean that my TC is toast? or is there anything i can do to fix it? car still drives perfect..... Also do i have any chance of getting this fixed under warranty with an after market clutch?

Don't know how warranty situation works in the States, but you should get your TC fixed before it gets any worse.

By the way, what oil was last put into the t/c? From what I've heard, anything else other than Diaqueen then you're buggered.

I doubt they will warranty that, its an 03. contact Jon at TRE Team ripp in Kalamazoo michigan. He sends you a "tote" to ship it back in. I got one from him, you cant bust his with the forged spider gears. he goes by the name "Gears" on this site. Besides Bananas and saw dust, there is NO FIX!! Sorry to hear about it, been there, not going back!!! Get the TRE T/C.

When you talk about your tranny whining, how loud is the sound exactly.

Mine makes a "whine" type sound, but isn't it normal to have some drivetrain "whine" with an awd car?

I'm just curious if this sound is normal, or if its something to worry about as well.

The whine that you hear is normal, when you accelerate, if the whine keeps whineing while your driving, then you can worry about things.

Could or couldn't be shot... I was told by the dealer it sounded like my TC was bad and that I could find out for sure if they took it apart... I siad the heck with it, and someone I know who built an 03 Evo to about 500HP said the car's get really whiney on their own when you throw an aftermarket cutch in the car.

You prolyl will have no luck with warranty having an aftermarket clutch.

Dont take my advice 100% to heart b/c I dont want your T.C. locking up on you if it really is bad, but I've put 5k miles on my car since I was told it might be back. It hasn't gotten louder, I've launched it a few times, and nothing has broken. Not saying the dealer has no idea what theyre talking about. Theyre great where I go... However, since I have seen nothing get worse, Im not going to pay someone to rip my T.C. apart for validation. I think it's naturally noisey with a heavy clutch.

Also, what type of whine?? My car is lloudest at partial throttle in gear... If i take it out of gear it goes away except for normal AWD noise. At full throttle it's not as loud as partial for me... Just my opinion. Just be safe.

Go to the dealer and get that **** replaced. I got mine done under warrenty at about 37k.

Remember you have till 60k to replace major powertrain components.

^ Please ellaborate.

Mitsu warranties are ...well...not too generous. How did you get mitsu to warranty the TC?

I have an 03 with 42K on it, drives fine, pulls hard; minus the constant TC whine at 80mph. That is the only speed where i get a loud whine. It is very audible over my RS-R turboback, so i would consider it a very loud whine. I think i will end up having to have shep rebuild my tranny, unless i can talk the dealer into warranting the TC

I know there not but you need to be persistant. At first they were like haha no way, "you have an aftermarket clutch which caused the problem". So I had them bring the district rep to the dealer so I could speak with him. I gave him the facts on how my ACT had nothing to do with my failing TC which I obtained from ACT and Shep.

So basically the district rep made me put the stock clutch back in before he would honor the repair.

My mods at the time were TBE, MBC, intake, flash, ACT.

They replaced the TC, rebuilt tranny and new synchros.

i'm wondering too as to what kind of whining.

mine doesn't whine at all during acceleration. it does kinda when i have my foot very lightly on the gas, not enought to speed up but to keep it going at a slow speed.

tc howl

Hey whats up, the wine that your hearing is the ring and pinion... my brothers started winin like that he took it apart, and took it to shep, shep just looked at it turned it and started laughin, just looked at my brother and told him he was screwed, shep told my brother it was from the sudden drivetrain shock "aka: launching it alot" the ring and pinion will actually warp and then inturn junks the first spider gear..... the ring and pinion is the only thing in the tc that can't be replaced..... so your done.. however my brother did drive his for like 2000mile like that with no other problems but now with his 2.1destroked motor and the whole thing built to the max, he's getting alot of vibration, he thinks the tc messed up the rear end form driving it like that for so long... so becarefull ya he has a tilton clutch but its not the cluth the vibration is in the rear....so on this note does anyone got a spare rear end laying around..... and good luck on the warrenty thing my brother tried that first when it happend they told him to pound salt..

That's exactly when I hear a whine. Cruisin in 5th gear at 80mph. It is very faint though. I was told it was probably my fuel pump. Don't know if I have a Walbro yet, but will find out soon. Does anyone think I am hearing my TC and not my fuel pump? I have an '03 with 25K on it.
