I have an RSX and I'm bout to upgrade to a 06IX. I say go with the Evo if you want performance and AWD. And the difference between an 05 and 06 evo, well there are many people on the boards who went running for the IX when they came out due to their potential. But imo if you don't use an evo to their potential or don't have a sight in modding. Then I say go with the RSX, has better interior than the EVO, gas mileage, good for commutes, numerous mods available. But seems like you are a performance kind of guy, coming from a 300zxTT, I say go with the EVO, you will be disappointed by the lack of torque and FWD of a RSX. If you can go with a IX. People spend a lot more money on their 05 just to get it as fast as a IX with just a simple intake,tbe and flash.

My vote goes to the evo. Infact, when it was time for me to get a new car, I was in the exact same boat as you. I drove a new RSX-S and it was a nice car, but when I drove an evo, the one I bought, the turbo blew me away. In my opinion, I liked the way the evo drove alot better than the RSX-S and I instantly fell in love with the turbo. But, wht I'd suggest is to do a little research on both cars, such as insurance, aftermarket parts, maintenance, etc... and choose which ever car suits your needs. The RSX-S is a fun little car with a little kick in it, but I'm definately glad that I chose the evo over the RSX-S, I have no regrets.

I have an 05 evo and and 04 rsx-s in my garage. The rsx is a better daily driver (cali traffic) than the evo. It's only good when you don't want to go fast and just need to drive. The rsx is easier to drive, but the evo is more fun to drive. I see myself taking out the evo more often than the rsx.
For me, I love driving and don't mind the "notchiness, bumpiness, and stiffness" of the evo. I actually love those factors.
And as for which year to get, get at LEAST an 05 evo. There isn't TOO much of a difference between the 05 and 06 as to compared with an 03-04 to an 06. ACD, 10.5 hotside, etc etc.

As far as regreting an 05 to an 06...here is the thing you have to think about. Buying any used car you are taking a chance. If you can find an evo in good condition that hopefully wasn't beat on than I am sure you will be happy.
The next question is what are your intentions with mods. If your going to go crazy, turbo kit, fuel system, pistons rods...all of it. Well than 06 or 03 who cares. Nine vs. eight means little. That is like buying an 06 MR and than dropping 25 grand into it...you could have saved the money and just bought an RS.
Do I wish I had a nine...right now...heck yeah. I am running 330 to the wheels...a nine with my same mods is at like 370 or better whp. Will I care in a year...nope. Hopefully by than I will have all of the major mods I want and than back to my original comment....any evo is going to make 500, 600, 700 whp with the right mods. So again, ask yourself, what are your eventual intentions.
Either way....evo all the way.

that funny there was a Moded up RSX Type S that hit up my Evo 9 MR today on the way home from work so i thought i would amuse him a little so when we both took off from a rolling start i half a$$ the gas pedal alittle so letting him go ahead and when his VTEC kicked in, i let my VTEC kicked in and blew right pass him in 3rd gear 
but the RSX was pulling strong lot of power for a NA, hondas are good cars

The RSX Type-S is a good car, but come on. It was cool for around a year, then the WRX came to the U.S. and sparked the current generation of factory force induction four-cylinder compact cars and completely blew the Type-S out of the water in terms of performance. I don't blame Acura/Honda for not bringing the Type-R here to compete with the onslaught of stock boosted motors. At that time, there weren't too many reasons to get an RSX Type-S over its new competition. Yes, owners of base RSXs bought it for its interior and exterior style, but buyers considering the Type-S are obviously a bit more in favor of performance, which was found in greater amounts in newer cars. Even now, the Type-S is totally overshadowed by the new Civic Si, which has basically the same motor but with an LSD and a better audio system for less money, hence the forthcoming demise of the current RSX.
If your price range is definitely limited to $25k or less and you insist on getting a new car, then you should consider a Honda Civic Si or VW Golf GTI, as a few have already mentioned. Neither are bad cars. The Si is around $20k for a well-equipped base model and comes with peppy performance and really good handling for a FWD car. The GTI is a few grand more but has a lag-free motor that you don't have to redline to get some punch out of it. However, if you're willing to shell out some extra money or get a used car, then obviously the Evo is the way to go, for the reasons stated in the previous three pages before my post.

evo has a whole lotta more performance. how could you go from a stage 4 300zx to a rsx? take a ride in the evo. I got a 05 and put about $1500 into it and i can tell a there is a big difference from the new 06. If you want to have a fun time modding and getting a lot out of your car such as it seems you did with the nissan, the evo is great. it all comes down to what you want to do with your car. do u want a fast car? do you want to mod it? 2 door? 4door? smooth suspension? tight suspension? ask yourself all these questions and more before deciding what to get

esp. the 05+ models with factory high spoiler....damn i have a soft spot for them
but yea i forgot to bring up the new Si. if u read around rsx boards u'll see that the Si and rsx-s have almost identical accelerations, but the Si with LSD will outhandle the rsx-s on the track. plus the Si comes with a navi as an option...if u pick the rsx/si over the Evo u obviously favor comfort and interior amenities more...and in that case the new Si makes more sense.

when i had my car serviced at HBMitsu i needed a loaner car. they let me take a rsx type-s for a few hours. this is the first time i've sat in/driven one. the rsx was definitely a nice car. the power and handling was alright...not nearly as quick or handled as well as my last car, mazdaspeed protege. anyway, if there is any possibility that you can afford more than 25k, then try to get the evo. you won't be disappointed with it...UNLESS, money is really an issue for you. a lot of people also don't realize that maintenence on the evo can get pretty expensive (tires, frequent fluid and oil changes, etc.). some may agree with me, some may not. i dunno.

if your gonna spend 25 g's get a new si rsx-type s is not worth the 24 g's i had a 2005 rsx type s traded it in for an evo IX. got burned by a si off the start and almost won on a 30 roll not worth it si better bang for 25 with navi may i add one of my boy got it and it took me 4 out of 4 times.

Unfortunately, the rsx couldn't continue what the 'teg did for acura in the 90s...drive both of them and do your research financially as well as all the kool specs and stuff...the evo is definitely a high priced escort and this factor should not be overlooked for obvious reasons...if you're still performance minded I don't see why a GTI or the new si should not suffice - personally, I think these are two greater alternatives compared to the rsx...or if you really want a 4-door, just wait for the 4 dr civic si!!! g/l on your choice and make a concientious one...
