Fuel light comes on, how much more can you go?
Hey guys, I have a question. After your fuel light comes on, how much longer can you guys usually go? I'm too chicken to test it for myself in fear i'll run out of gas.

50 kms or 30miles.. then wat happens is that when u start taking hard turns, the car will jerk due to fuel starvation.. then even after that, u will be able to go slow and the car will sputter if u brake too hard.. later, the car will just idle rejecting any fuel accelaration.. at the end i will just stall and the engine will shut down..
it happened to me..

I think it's at least 40 miles remaining when the light comes on. I drive Chicago-Ann Arbor for Michigan games. My light comes on when I have like 25 miles left to drive in Michigan and I fill up 15 miles into Indiana. I am on fumes by then and the tank takes between 13 and 14 gallons.
I too ran out of gas once and the car did not jerk as much as it just went to idle as mentioned above. I was still under warranty so I called Mitsu roadside assistance and I got my two free gallons in about 30 minutes. It was cold and I was too lazy to walk a mile to the next exit. Filled 12.5 gallons at the station and that's when I learned the tank holds 14.50 from fumes to full.
I haven't run out of gas since then, but one time I put 14.25 gallons in the tank! Seriously running on fumes that time.

As mentioned, the owner's manual says 14.0 gallons. I took the car out on a fun drive a couple weekends ago and noticed some stuttering around corners near the end. I was damn near empty, I got 14.25 gallons left and that's without topping it off or anything.

In my IX, I haven't pushed the limits, but I try to not drive more than 15 miles once the light comes on. I figure that you can still be worry-free and conservatively drive 15-20 miles (in the city) or 20-25 miles (on the highway) without really giving it much thought. But after that, you'd better fill up.
