Don't be surprised if most of these surface very soon after buying a modded 03.
Good idea on trying a JDM MR DV, but don't pay $90 for a used one, especially if that's your friend. They cost $105 new. Also, either remove that intake or get flashed immediately. That will also cause problems. The TBE is nice, but you probably need to find out if it has a fuel pump upgrade and a boost control upgrade. I would be surprised if the previous owner didn't have an MBC or EBC then put it back to stock...

My instinct says there's a reason why it was so cheap...
You're certain the guy put on those mods but not an MBC or fuel pump? That would really worry me, because it just doesn't make sense, so I hope nothing else is wrong.

It is most likely the VTA BOV. I bought my car with a greddy types VTA on it and had the same problem with it stalling. I changed my driving style in stead of popping the clutch in as soon as I wanted slow down I leave it out till the tack comes down to about 2k. I also added a HKS EIDS to help smooth it out. I would have just put the stock one back on it but the car didn't come with it or the return hose. Now that I am used to and using the EIDS my can never stalls or drops the idle down.

It boggles the mind.
OP, 39k miles? If it has the stock clutch, then whether she never launched or drove it hard really won't matter. You can wear out the clutch just from riding it and not driving properly. You can definitely expect to spend $1500 replacing it in the near future, so be ready.

Like I said, the clutch is fine, and I doubt I'll have to replace it for another 10,000 miles at least. I just got back from picking up my parts and will install them first thing tomorrow. Thanks guys...SSQV soon to be for sale .

How warm? Does the needle travel over the temp design? (as reference - my needle points right at the "water" part of the logo)
Take your radiator cap off (if it is warm use a heavy rag, and watch the hot fluid). Does it burp / is the system pressurized? Is the overflow full?
Since it is used the last owner may have run high psi over long periods of time with the stock head studs. This could have stretched the head studs and could lead to a bad head gasket.
BTW - you are not too far from KZOO...

The car works!!! It was indeed the damn SSQV...my new diverter valve gets 'er done without ANY hiccups, it's nice and quiet too boot! I also got that stock intake box on with my KnN drop in, and IMO the car pulls harder now. We MADE SURE that the fuel pump was stock, and no MBC was on there ANYWHERE. Looks like I'm fine now. Thanks all .
