Possible Oil Overfill??

I just changed my oil at the 1000 mile mark yesterday and the sears computer said 5.4 quarts. I was a bit shocked so I called two shops one said right under 5 and a mitsu dealer said 4.5?? I went ahead and had them do it at about 5 quarts but when I checked the stick it read a little under full so I added another half quart.

What is the exact amount of oil for a hot oil change on these cars?

Should i let some out?

4.5 quarts is for any 4G63. My 1G Talon is 4.5 quarts as well. 5 quarts will not hurt it if its a little overfull. It is most common to just put in 5 to compensate for any that leaks or gets burned.

Read your owners manual. There should be 2 numbers - with filter and without filter.

I would, but how are you planning to do so?

Learn how check you oil level. There is a proper way and there is a wrong way. It sounds like you did it the wrong way. Your engine should be a normal operating temp and then you turn off the engine, wait about 5 mintues and then check you oil from the dipstick on a level surface.

I was told to run car and get it warm, then turn off and immediately check...

But I'll try it this diff way and see...

I'll just go by Jiffy Lube have them drop some and add some myself if I need to

Oil changes are super easy, save some cash next time - try it yourself. And you did use Mobil 1 right?

I just checked the oil level, I let the car warm up to operating temp and turned off car, waited 5 min and checked and it was inside the shaded region (which i assume is what's used to tell where the oil level is at), shoudl i still remove some?

If you are inbetween the marks you are good don't worry about it.

In the future it is better to run you car a 1/2 quart low than over full. Most cars if you over fill the oil the crank splashes in the oil and foams the oil. This is bad.

I put in a little more than 4.5 on the stick it reads just below the top of the shading.

These cars have an oil cooler and internal engine galleries which may or may not drain. Also, notice that the OEM filter is larger than after market filters. So, the amount of oil it takes to fill the engine to the full mark will vary depending on how much oil drains and the size of the filter.

I suggest filling with 4 quarts, running the engine to fill the filter, and then topping off with whatever amount it takes to bring the level to the full mark on the dipstick. This eliminates confusion about the amount to use.

I'd suspect that the oil change volume computer was inaccurate -- maybe the guy spilled 1/2 quart on the floor... If your oil level is between the lines on the dipstick, all's good to go.

Well I checked again and it was over by a alot, so a local shop (MZM) offered a hand by draining some of the oil and all is good now.
