The best place is drill the #1 runner in the manifold. Drilling the downpipe can be done but it is not very accurate (might not even be worth a EGT gauge if you don't get good readings).

Save your money and forget about an EGT gauge. Spend the money on a good tune. If you don't want to get your ECU flashed then save that money to put towards the engine management of your choice. If your boost, AFR, and knock are all in order then IMO the EGT gauge is useless. If you run it in the downpipe it becomes even more useless.

tanabe sells their dp with a egt bung welded in the upper portion of the dp.. about 3 inches down from the mounting location... im pretty sure they dont do it on accident, whether its there or the manifold i bet the temp difference isnt more than 3 to 5 degrees

#2 runner on the manifold is the spot.. it'll just void the warranty on your manifold.. so if you do this, dont try to get a cracked manifold replaced under warranty.. oh, and don't try to get a seized turbo replaced either if you get metal shards sucked into it...

You can use the number 1 or number 2. IIRC, the number one is preferred since it links to cylinder that runs leanest, hence the highest EGT numbers.

Well i am going to get an ECU Tune in the near future and that about it except a TBE. I did get oil pressure and temp plus boost that should be good a wide band would be my last gauge but that really would be for looks cuz i am not gonna push the car past that with mods. It does seem thu the real question is still #1 or 2 but not worth the warrenty issue.

You're supposed to drill the manifold with the car running so it blows the shards out.

LoL, Yep you might want to do it the right way and put it on the manifold. You can buy a wideband and put that into your downpipe.
