Turbo Upgraded Evo VIII...

has anyone upgraded the turbo on their stock Evo yet... im looking for an upgrade on the turbo, im trying to break 11s... i know many ppl have hit mid 12s with basic bolt ons but... im wondering if anyone has tweaked the boost pretty high or actually swapped the turbo.... i know the cars capable of hitting very low qtr. mile times, even though its meant mainly for track purposes....

so if anyone has any experience with upgrading their turbo, or boosting over 20lbs... let me know your thoughts and what engine modification route I should go....

i keep hearing that the 16g turbo has put many a eclipse into the 11's and low 12's, and that its an extremely capable turbo. i havent had any experience with this car, but i think that with a good stand alone ECU and a good map tailored to your interest (street gas or race gas) you should be able to acheive at least 330 - 340 @ wheels at somewhere around 23-24 psi. any higher psi , the turbo may not be effeicient and you may be putting the stock internals at jeopardy.

i personally would change the turbo and go for a 25g. that should put you at around 400hp @ wheels at 20psi. hopefully i will eventualy do that.

edit-

Pruven Performance is already running an upgraded stock turbo with bigger compressor wheels - i hear its good for over 30 more wheel HP - they have been testing various wheels to find the best combination and no doubt they will be selling a turbo upgrade soon

That's what an upgraded turbo is.......the same housing with a bigger impeller. TD05H 16G, 18G, 20G......same housing, different impeller sizes.

Al, can you please elaborate on the backward-spinning turbo? I have not yet purchased the EVO and have been waiting to see what effect this design would have on the "moddability" of the motor. Some have said that it was Mitsu's strategy to stop us power-hungry consumers - and others think that Mitsu may be trying to corner the mod market, not using their own company, but perhaps with their former Zaibatsu or current Keiretsu partners. Anyway, just wondering how difficult it will be to source different turbos for the motor. Thanks in advance.

That isn't true. When you upgrade a TD05H 16G to a 20G wheel, you also generally upgrade the compressor housing to a 17C.

Here are some comparisons of common Mitsubishi turbos used on DSMs.

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/Turbo-compare.html

However, none of these wheels or compressor housings will work on an Evo's turbo.

You should be able to run 11s on the stock turbo in your Evo. My advice is to upgrade everything you possibly can and tune your car with race gas and a datalogger. Then make a turbo swap if you didn't go as fast as you wanted to.

First off, many DSMs have hit low 12s with a 16g, but not many have hit 11s. I think the record on a 16g was 11.6x, but it was generally considered quite an accomplishment if you ever broke 11s. My experience with 16Gs in DSMs is as follows:

'90 Talon TSi AWD - ported _small_ 16g, FMIC, S-AFC, K&N Cone Filter, Walbro 255, Magnecore 8.5mm wires, Copper NGK BPR7ES, 550s, 3" Turbo-Back, ported exh mani, ported O2 housing, ACT 2600, crushed stock BOV, MBC@22psi on race gas, 10 degree timing advance, 22-24psi on 225/45zr17 Pole Position 2s - ran a best ET of 12.10 twice, and a best MPH of 114, and many 1.63-1.65 60's.

'93 Talon TSi AWD - ported small 16g, crappy Volvo truck FMIC, K&N Cone, Walbro 255, Copper NGKs, 450s, home-made 3" turbo-back, ported evo III exh mani, ported evo III O2 housing, ACT 2100, stock BOV, mbc@22psi on race gas, 22-24psi on some random crap 225/45h17s - ran a best ET of 12.45 (108mph), and a best mph of 110 with mostly 1.71-1.75 60's.

These were all just bolt-ons, and many of them were very easy. With the EVO, I think you can get low 12s, but breaking 11s will take some very good driving and some very good tuning. I see most people trying to stick with 20psi on this 16g, but I regularly ran 22 at the track on race gas. I kept it at 19 on pump gas.
