Who needs AC? Only time I ever use it is when it rains. Any other time, top is down (vert).

Mythbusters re-tested in a later episode, and came to a new conclusion.

The fundamental flaw in the first test was that the point where the drag becomes powerful enough to inhibit a car's performance with windows down was inside their 45-55mph margin at 50mph. Going less than 50mph it is more efficient to leave your windows down, but going greater than 50mph it is more efficient to use your A/C.

Cool. Yeah I assummed everyone would know that "highway" speeds were what was being referred to. Common sense tells you faster = more drag.

Ha! You try driving in SC in the middle of the summer with a black car, black leather seats without a/c! Not a nice experience! A/c on whenever possible!

as promised yesterday, I turned the A/C on for the first time today......works great, I don't know why I haven't used it earlier. Sapped a little power from the car, but I didn't notice any rough idling or anything. Kinda nice to drive with the windows up, kept out a lot of street and exhaust sounds I took for granted till now.

has anyone tested how much gas mileage (if any) was compromised if blasting the A/C all the time vs leaving the window sopen?

Using your A/C smartly should not eat too much gas to a point in which it's not economically feasible. This is what I do:

I only use the drive side and left middle vent only, closing every other one off. I put the vent on face, and drive with the coldest setting (but not "Max AC") with it recirculating.

I drive 98% highway everyday for work, so I noticed using my AC only impacted gas milage by about 1-2 mpg!!

Of course, I baby the car like crazy with the AC on...keep it out of boost, and drop it to 60 mph...driving sanely and keeping it out of boost is the best way to save gas, not by sweating it out in 100 degree heat.

^ thats a good way to do it.

i personally never use it unless the girlfriend, sisters, or my mother (pretty much females) are in the car. i nor my male counterparts don't really give a $hit. that's what windows are for. well with the exception of two weeks ago... one of CALI's hottest heat waves. now it's back to windows down.
