Boost Leak... Maybe?

Boost Leak... Maybe?
Ok heres the stuation. My car is a nearly stock '03 VIII. I have a TBE installed now, with a flash. I have a autometer cobalt boost gauge that I installed last night. The boost gauge is tapped into the FPR vacumm line that is really close to the hole in the firewall on the passenger side of the car. Line runs to a steering columm mounted gauge pod. My problem now. is today was the first time I took my car up to redline, or even drove fast since I put in the gauge. I took it from first to second pulling hard. I hit about 5700 RPM (give or take) and my boost drops from around 20 psi, to ten, nearly instantly ( as fast as the gauge can move) i feel the car fall off. I then took it out out to a dusty road and ran first to second to third to fourth and it fell off in all four gears. (didnt even go into fifth). Sleet told me it sounds like a boost leak, and I hear a noise that sounds like a leak when my boost starts to drop off and feathers around between five and ten PSI. My only concern is that if its a boost leak then why am i not feeling it between hitting full boost and 5700 rpm's? Any input is welcome. I looked over the engine bay and cannot see any vacumm lines disconnected or intercooler pipes blown off( i think i could have figured that problem out on my own). Thanks for your time all.

If your snorke is missing the two plastic clips then it will do this.
It did it on mine until I took two clips out of the trunk and replaced them.
Nto sure why it did it but Warr told me about it and when I fixed it, it boosted all the way to redline.
Try that and let me know.

Dude, I had the same problem.
Loosing boost at high RPM's right?
I asked Warr about it in PM and that is what he asked and I told him yeah my snorke is loose.
If yours is then I would check that first its an easy fix.

I did it right after he posted and it worked, thanks alot mate
Warrtalon? Why is this how come something like that made a difference. I would understand if it was high speed causing the problem. Then I could see the plastic pushing up and robbing the motor of airflow, but at high boost in first at like 35 mph? why did this cause this problem. When i bought my car the pins were in the glovebox and in stock form it didnt even make a difference.

At right around 6000rpm under full boost, the snorkel gets sucked up against the hood. Speed doesn't matter - it's suction. There's more air being sucked in at higher rpms rather than lower rpms and in higher gears than lower gears. It is more likely to happen in 3-5, but back when I had the problem it sometimes would happen only in 3rd or higher, but other times in 1-2.
After the snorkel sucks up against the hood, it immediately cuts off the air supply, causes the turbo to die, and makes a loud whistling noise that everyone initially thinks is a boost leak. That's what I thought it was, so I spent a week doing boost leak tests, changing clamps, switching BOVs, switching MBCs, etc etc. It wasn't until a buddy with a fellow MR asked me why I didn't have my snorkel clips that I bothered to get some from the trunk and fasten it down. Next thing you know, my car is back to normal, and I feel like a big jackass. Oh well, I got rid of every boost leak known to man, learned a ton about my car, and was able to have a full understanding of the problem so that I could almost instantly help anyone who makes a post like this.

Because you weren't sucking in enough air to cause it. Stock boost has sever taper, but with an MBC you not only raise the max boost, but significantly reduce the taper. Pretty simple, eh.

Thanks Warr,
I will make a note of the bat-talon.
As a side note, I received an email from Al asking me to resend my ROM to him which I did yesterday morning. So hopefully with my minor mods he may be able to get to it early next week when he gets back in from Florida.
Thanks again

no prob man.
I had the same prob and I was looking all over the car for the problem until I finally asked Warr.
As long as you keep the clips on there the MBC will only help not hurt just make sure to not over boost. Start with the lowest setting and slowly work your way up.
Happy boostin.
