if i swap out my 9.8 hs turbo for a IX turbo will i need a tune? or can i drive it and then get a tune in like a month to make some more power?

and where can i find a used IX turbo? i know Warr is looking for one.

P.S. can i use a 03 3" down pipe? or will i need a diffrent one?

You should be o.k.....just turn your boost down to 18-19# and keep your eye on the AFR's. After the tune you can crank the boost back up.

yeah, i can't see needing a tune just by swapping the two turbos. your car is already tuned for boost. it's not like you're putting a turbo on an NA car. it seems like some people on this board think you need a tune after every single mod.

It is a bigger turbo that makes more power. Am I wrong? You need a tune.

In a way you're right and in a way you're wrong. It(the IX) does have a bigger compressor housing but shares the same CHRA as the earlier Evo 8 turbo and the same 10.5 as used on all 2004+ Evos. It does produce more power though, especially on race gas or alky and at the higher boost levels.

Yeah, don't get me wrong - if you want to drive the car hard and be safe then yes, by all means tune the car. but you won't blow it up by swapping turbos and not getting a tune for a month. just don't go hard and listen for detonation. hell, don't shift past 3500 rpm.

I think you'll need a tune to make more power...but that turbo isn't really different enough IMHO to really NEED a tune to drive it safely. If your previous tune worked, chances are it will work with a IX turbo. However, if you want to maximize the performance to take advantage of what the new turbo can do, you'll need a tune. I mean, the wastegate will still open at the same boost pressure as before, so you shouldn't be running higher boost...
