Q: How can you tell when a car salesman or finance manager is lying to you?

A: His lips are moving.

I avoided all the fianancing traps the stealerships try to pull by paying everything before I took delivery of the car. Even so they still tried to trick us into buying gap insurance and window etching. Just remember that no matter what the sales people say, they are out to get as much money out of you as posible.

Its a live and learn lesson. No one put a gun to your head and said buy this car. It is your job as the consumer to educate yourself about the purchase that you are making and to read the contract. Remember that the contract and car is not your until you have physically taken delivery of the vehicle and driven it off the lot. So you can always ask to pick up the car at a later date to give you time to think about it and still walk away. Also I know in California for sure check with your local laws if the car is delivered to your home or business and the contracts are signed away from the dealership you have by law a 3 day cooling off period

That's an excellent point. Just mentioning that you might do that, at the advice of your father/mother/friend/etc, can change the course of events.

I use to sell cars and yes i sold mitsus and I have never taken advantage of someone. So it really gets to me when someone starts to generalize about how all salesman are theives and liars etc. The salesman is usually a peon in the game. The Closer and the sales guy DO NOT decide what the price of the car is it is the SALES MANAGER. If you really want to make it easy get them to come out of the fort. And when you get the 4 square write take it from the salesman, write down your REASONABLE offer and whatever other REASONABLE demands (ie. accesories, gap, etc..) and sign it. Tell him that you have 15-20 minues to have them accept your offer. If it takes too long then tellhim you need to go and to call you.

I walked out when I was buying my Evo. The sales manager told me "this is the best I can do" I stood up, said "thank-you for your time" and proceeded to leave. His jaw dropped. "Where are you going man?" he said. "You said thats the best price you can do, its not what I want....so I am going to go buy that 350z down the street that I have my eye on." That woke him up.....

Well GAP depends. You shouldnt pay nor more than 375 ish for gap and if your not putting anything down or have negative equity rolling into the new car then it suggested to get it. However if you are putting down at least 20% of the price of the car then you dont need it. Some GAP companies will also reiumburse you up to 1000 deductible and make 2 payments in the event of a total loss

I, for one, appreciate how hard some slaesmen work to make a living. There are some unethical ones and there are some good ones. I hold a grudge against sales managers. They're the ones who are skilled at manipulating figures in order to maximize their profit. Salesmen just follow the lead from the manager. To all of you out there who are thinking of buying a new car soon - never NEVER negotiate on the basis of payment alone. Negotiate the purchase price. Thousands of dollars will be wasted if you let them sell you a car based on payment. If you are intimately acquainted with the amoritization formula as I am, you can talk payment. Otherwise, don't go there.

gap is good for people that drive a lot of miles. I usually want to purchase gap. It's probably better however to get gap from your insurance provider.

My gf got screwed by a dealer that i was negotiating with for her because she accepted his counter offer that was $1000 more than was I was willing to give him...

she caved because she liked the car and needed one asap. man it pissed me off because i was feeling so good about my negotiation skills. bottom line is sale people will try and take advantage of your situation to make a sale. It's their job to, i accept it and try to turn my situation into pushing them in the direction i want them to go.

It took me a month to get my 9MR and traded in my 8. They gave me 21,500 for my 8 that had 49,000 miles on it w/ hail damage and a huge dent in the door and I got the MR for 31,900. Each weekend he would call me and give me 1000$ more for my car lol. I also got 5 free oil changes. Take your time to get a car, it was worth 5-6k for 3-4 hours of work in the long run.

I tried to do that same thing for my GF's car, but they actually never caved, and she ended up buying a different car, it sucked.

They WOULDN'T give us the trade value her car is worth and the MSRP of the car she wanted, it was BS, we weren't even asking for anything unreasonable. They just kept saying it was a rare vehicle that they could easily sell for thousands more, i was like "alright good luck." Then every weekend they would call and be like "we will give what you want for trade in, but we aren't going under 3k over msrp on the car" i was like, you're kidding right? Every weekend for like 2 months this went on. Retards...
