My story from the evo vs wrx shootout

I havent posted anything on here yet cuz as soon as i got home i went out to the club and got drunk, basically as most of you know the evo vs. wrx day was beat because of the rain. I was ready to run my car on racegas had to buy a helmet and some other crap at the englishtown gift shop. Then i run out of ciggarettes and decide to go to the deli with a friend of mine, and make sure my boost is set at 27-28 psi.
Well i didnt get far i check my boost on the stretch to the stop sign and its a nice 28 psi, my friend tells me "man i havent been in your car when you launch it ever" i say well im about to give you a launch, i hit the two step of the stop sign car makes about 14 psi standing still drop the clutch and suprisingly the car hooks and we take off but as soon as that happens we hear a loud bang, i immediately slow down and park the car in the first driveway, because as i am driving it makes a loud ticking, or tapping noise. The car still goes into any gear and it still drives the only thing is it taps like a mother effer when it does and the tapping or clunking gets faster as with speed so i dont chance it and tow the car home.
I go back and ask some people what it might be and they say i most likely broke an axel or broke the driveshaft or messed up the transfer case.

What do you guys think it might be?

heres a pic of the car in line for the shootout

It is probably piston slap, or something like that. look at the oil level. mine didn't make a POP when my bearing spun, it just got louder "ticking" when I accelerated. you have to pull the oil pan, and look for copper bearing pieces in there, and you could also cut your oil filter in half to check for said pieces.

Silverbullet,

The first thing you need to do is to isolate the sound. Engine, tranny or drivetrain?. Turn off the engine and have a couple of friends pushing your car with the engine shut off.

First roll the car in neutral. Then press the clutch and still roll the car in neutral.
Then turn on the engine and last but not least depress the clutch pedal.

After all these testing you should be able to narrow the sound to engine, tranny or drivetrain.

I recently saw my friends car with a loose clutch assembly inside the clutch housing. You wouldn't imagine how loud the sound was. Everyone thougt he had a bent rod.

Please, follow my simple, fast and free t-shooting tips to determine your failure

Carlos

You might have broken a center carrier bearing bracket. look under the car. does it "feel" like a thumping under the "tunnel" of the car?

Amen! It's an expensive path.

To the OP, it was difficult to diagnose the cause of the noise without it being on the lift. After it was in the air I could hear it. Will it make the noise at idle too? When revving does it make the noise louder? If so investigate into the rod knock.

If not then it's definately in the tranny, x-case, rear diff somewhere. Most tranny, x-case, etc. problems you can only hear when actually moving. If it's at idle too then you may have a spun bearing.

Good luck bro!
