Evo vs Cobra Mustang Debate on www.svtperformance.com board
It is in the "Terminator" section (2003 Cobra Section).
I personally have both, and the Cobra is way faster once moving, but I think the Evo would actually win in a street race for ¼ mile or less.
On the street you don't get the benefit of a burnout, lowered tire pressure, etc..... plus the road is not nearly as sticky as the track. I cannot put my foot down in the cobra until well into 1st, almost 2nd gear depending on the road. I would think by then the evo is a good bit down the road.
at the end of the ¼ the cobra is going 110-115mph while the evo is going 100-105....but street races don't last that long and are not under perfect launching circumstances.
Just my opinion.

I can say your definitely right.. I've raced 3 SVT Cobras, won 2 of the three "Street Races" I keep telling everyone that 1/4 times are deceptive because its a controlled environment.. Traction is the key, I usually can get 2 or more car lengths ahead in a street race on cars that should really be alot faster.. and they end up spending their time chasing me down.. The more "Fair" races are usually at a roll.. and most of the time its the "Psych-out" factor, because they end up spinning tires and losing ground..
The best and closest race I EVER had with my Evo was with a nicely tuned RSX.. It was so close that only traction made a difference in the wins (again I won 2 of 3 races, and all could be attributed to traction advantage)

yes that is true, but that is also the advangate of the EVO
Thats like saying you have a car that goes like 200 mph and yeah eventually the faster car would win, but from the view point of Acceleration the Evo clearly has the advantage. I like both cars and respect both. Just another adantage of AWD

As with any car owner, accepting defeat is damn hard.... these guys will pull their switchblades from their socks and hunt you down if you dis the cobra.

From a roll the Evo will get eaten alive by the Cobra. I used to own a supercharged 99 Mustang GT and I could not drive the car without drag radials on it as any action with the right pedal resulted in tyre smoke. Just for some comic relief I'll post a picture of my friend's 03 that has been prepared for Fun Ford weekend here in Houston tomorrow:
Should get a few laughs .

Where the heck do some of those guys live where they race Evo's all the time and spank em? I'm almost positive the Cobra is almost non-existent in most other countries and I've yet to see another Evo on the streets in San Diego. I'm almost willing to bet they are running down poor Lancers with no hope. I'm not going to go and say I could spank a Cobra cuz I know that car is plenty fast but from a stop I'm sure I would give it a run for it's money. And at the track..... well we all know that story. Amazes me how ignorant people can be.

Yeah seriously....what are the chances you're going to see an evo and a cobra (both pretty rare still) pull up at the same intersection, both in the front of the lane and both wanting to race. Everytime I've seen a Cobra (which in only a couple times), it's an older guy driving 10MPH under the speed limit.
It's the same nonsense with the Evo vs. STi......what are the chances you're going to be in the same situation with and Evo vs and STi? Both at the same intersection, front of the lane, wanting to drag.
Just get the car you love the most and enjoy it.
