In thailand we run around 85-100 C on normal driving.... on the track it can get up to 120C... so far it had not caused any blown motor on any of our cars here..... I was told that we shouldn't go above 125C though

120-125 C is common when pushing hard, anything higher, and (imo) you need to back it off a little, or upgrade coolers.

I agree... oil temp is very important on a road course. I've got one in my DSM for that reason, and that **** gets hot.

I'd say anything above 250*F and you're begining to push it.

I thought, a big part of it depends on the type of oil you use and your engine internals (if upgraded)...there's not really a set limit to what is a "hot" temp for an engine.

So 250 F is pretty hot for say....Mobil 1 10-30 but what about some race oils?

I'm using 10w40 and 10w50 for circuit racing at the moment.

Have tried Castrol RS 0w30 or 0w40 (forgot) and I think it's too thin for me... ended up having to pour in 1/3 L more after qualification day.

I at first ran the factory recommended Mobil1 10W-30, then tried 0W-30, then 5W-30, until recently switching to 5W-50 Mobil1 at my last oil change. I am considering switching to Motul 20W-60 LeMans 300v motor oil. It is an ester based synthetic, specifically designed for endurance racing and has exceptional high temp stability. Where I live, in the Tropics, it can get uber warm.

Edit: Back on topic, I feel it is important to monitor all vital engine functions. So as soon as I get the money, I plan on purchasing oil temp, oil pressure, and coolant temp gauges to keep myself informed as to my engines state of health.

On a Porsche for example, the oil temp is especially critical as there is no coolant and the engines are air and oil cooled. On our Evos eventhough we have coolant systems with water pump, thermostat, and radiator, the oil not only serves as a lubricant but also transfers heat away from the engine. Heat which is radiated out via the oil cooler.

As has been pointed out already...oil and coolant have different rates of temperature rise, and also cool at differing rates. They have different boiling points as well. I would think that you'd wanna keep tab of each separately as eventhough they tend to rise together the rate of rise isn't directly proportional.

The way I see it, it's not the oil that is the problem (assuming an Evo driver is using something reputable). I run AMSoil on the track, and when I asked about the oil temps at the local tuner place, they said the oil would be okay but the internals on the car wern't meant to handel that hot of oil. I kind of think of it has hot water. can water handel 200* without boiling? Yes.... but I wouldn't want to drink it.
