Here is my review on the HKS Silent
I posted this on another board. will be gone for a week, so I will not be able to answer any questions...
Here is my review on the HKS Silent
First to answer your question: the Silent tapers down to 2.75" where it meet the cat and has one resonator and a backbox.
HP Gains
My IX holds around 1.5-1.55bar boost in the upper gears. The car made 75HP over stock figures in 36F hotter temperature from baseline (link to dyno sheet ). Power Mods: e-bay O2 Housing, HKS Downpipe, Custom Decat, HKS Silent Hi-Power, AMS LICP, Works drop-in Filter, HKS Iridium Spark Plugs, Walbro FP, Ecutek
Is it loud?
Silent w/t decat is livable. It will definitely be louder than stock – even at idle. Crusing around it is slightly louder, where the exhaust noise in the modified car now barely overtakes the engine noise. Before I could only hear the engine noise, which is not that nice anyways. At WOT it gets loud. I live in a crowded city and I try to avoid WOT because it will attract attention. This is rather due to the fact that in town the sides of the road are covered with buildings which amplifies the noise. In open b-roads, WOT runs are fun fun fun and make the perfect amount of noise for how fast the car is now...
Another thing that people who drove my car and I noticed – when you sit in the driver seat, the exhaust noise is noticably louder than when you sit in the passenger seat... I drove my wife, friends and colleques (mostly people slightly over 30 years of age) and all I got was compliments on the sound. Nobody said it was too loud. The only other referance point I can give is that the Silent with decat in the evo is ever sligthly louder than my bi-turbo S4 (b5) with catback exhaust... You can always put the catalizer back on if you still feel that the car is too loud. I would not recommend anything louder unless you aim for over 400HP
and here is another, where I answer some questions:
How would you say it compares in noise to other Evo exhausts you have heard
The cars at the shop I go are mostly heavily modified - there are only a few subis/evos that are not stroked with turbo kits. The cars with turbo kits are much louder to say the least...
One of the guys has a IX with HKS Manifold and Hi-Power and his car is louder than mine. However, he also has RS Intake and whenever I am in his car, I always find myself concentrating on the intake sound more than the exhaust... If you are the type that does not find the intake sound abnoxious/too much, I would venture that you might be OK with the regular Hi-Power.
When I started modding the car, I wanted to make sure that I would not do anything that would detract from making it a good daily driver, so intake / loud exhausts and stainless headers were out of the picture for sound & reliability/maintenance reasons (cracking at welds etc.) I am currently waiting for someone to put out decent cams for the IX at which point I might also consider a ported exhaust manifold and intercooler upgrade
does it have a bassy sound to it at idle
yes - it is bassier at idle. I park at a closed parking lot at work and it gets LOUD even at idle and ***** footing to the gate. Like I said earlier - you will not hear the engine after this but your exhaust and it does sound nice with a decat
is the noise at WOT a nice performance sound etc?
Subjective, but I love the sound at WOT. Anything much louder would be too much for me with this car. There must be clips of HKS Hipower somewhere... The silent is the same sound but a bit tamer...
Also with the resonator did you see if this was restrictive at all?
I never looked inside of the exhaust before it was put on the car. I believe that it only tapers to 2.75". As far as HP goes, my friend used to made 25HP more than me with HKS manifold + RS Intake and HKS Hi-power instead of Silent at a cooler temp. I would say at around 400HP at the front, HP difference from running a Silent would not be more than 5HP. There is a bushur racing dyno thread in evom.com. He tested various combinations of exhausts. David Bushur's testing shoved slight differences on 2.5" before catback vs. 3" before catback - I quote "The difference between a 2.5" downpipe, 2.5" offroad pipe and a 3" catback VS. a 3" downpipe, 3" offroad pipe and 3" catback on a 316 whp car is 2 hp and 10 ft lbs of torque".
5HP is nothing to sweat for in a 350HP+ car - less than 1.5% change that you will NOT be able to feel You will on the other hand DEFINITELLY hear the difference in sound
Also do you know how much of it tapers down - would for example a magnex decat pipe (3") suffice in replacing the tapered section?
Only a section of about 1-2 inches at the place where it connects to the cat tapers down. I actually accidentally backed up the car where I hit the exhaust and it started leaking. I had to get the piece connecting the back box to the straight section cut & reflanged. If you are **** about performance, you could have the pipe where it tapers cut and flanged and have a shop built you a custom cat-delete pipe built to make up for the difference in length... I thought about it at the time, but didn't do it as I thought it would not make a significant change in performance.
Cheers
