New EVO IX + whistling engine
Hello,
This is my first post. After a few weeks of hammering on the search function, I finally pulled the trigger yesterday and bought a brand new Electric Blue IX!
Some obligatory pictures are attached.
On the drive home from the dealership, I started to notice a high pitched whistling sound coming from the engine compartment. The whistling occurs between approx 3000RPM and 5000RPM, at half throttle or WOT, and in any gear. I'm assuming the high pitch whistle would continue all the way up to 7K RPM, but I'm not sure because I haven't taken it over 5K due to the break in period.
The high pitched whistling doesn't occur (or at least it isn't nearly as loud) if I'm at 1/8 throttle and I let the engine slowly creep from 3k to 5k. Also, the car is still very powerful even when the whistling is occurring. If it wasn't for the noise, I wouldn't even consider there was anything wrong.
Based on what I've read on here, it seems like this noise could be a "boost leak" related issue, although I haven't seen anyone else with this issue on a brand new car driven off the showroom floor. Suggestions??
BTW - other than tracking down the cause of the high pitched whistle, I'm very satisfied with my decision to buy the IX. I'm among the minority who plan to keep my car 100% bone stock!

No offense taken - it is possible the sound is normal, but I'm just not sure. This is my first EVO and none of my friends own one so I have no real basis for comparison. Also all of my previous cars have been naturally aspirated (S2000, 911, RX8).
I did expect to hear some 'whine' from the turbo but not a high pitched whistling sound...

Just an idea, when I first got my Evo, it made a strange whistle noise when I got on at higher rpm. I had an WRX before it, so I knew that it wasn't normal. It ended up being that the intake box was missing the rivits that hold it to the bumper and it some how created a noise at higher rpm/speed. But, like everyone else said, it is probably just the turbo spooling....

It's your TC going out!!!!!!!1 OH NOES!!!!!!11
Just kidding. It is probably your turbo. Also, I seem to be picking up some EMI on my Evo from something, so a whine gets transmitted through the speakers. It's just at the edge of hearing. Maybe it's something like this?

No it's not EMI - it happens even with the stereo turned off. Based on everyone's replies I'm pretty sure it's just the normal whistling of the turbo. It's just a lot louder than I expected
