How do you know when your transfer case is broken or gone??

im having an issue with my evo where its like a metal on metal rub in first gear could sound like a wine... it seems to be comng from the front driver side wheel. it only happens in first gear only when I start moving. sometimes its a light one feint sound but when I hold the clutch down just a little more, it gets a bit loud. please help!

Sir,that popping noice when you shift and release the clutch pedal is from your rear differential,its normal.transfer case not necessarily will whine.it can broke silently and you will not be able to drive.
